Default Parking Sensors Not Working

Jag 2004 XJ8. Parking sensors always worked fine until I had the car detailed. Stopped working thereafter.

Any Thoughts on this problem and any quick fix.

Thanks to all and great driving.

Hi Rob,

Does your car have both front and rear sensors, or rear sensors only?

According to the schematic, the Parking Aid Module (PAM) is mounted in the trunk in or near the spare tire well. It's wiring harness connects via a black 26-way connector. The PAM and, therefore all the sensors, are grounded via a ground/earth stud in the spare tire wheel well.

All four of the rear parking sensors connect to the PAM via a gray 10-way electrical connector that is mounted on the right-hand side of the trunk near the rear electronic module. If it is only rear sensors that are not working, perhaps this connector or the PAM ground point was disturbed when the car was detailed. You can clean it by separating the two halves and flushing the contacts with zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray.

It would be worth removing the nut from the ground stud and carefully cleaning the threaded stud, wire ring terminals and the flat surface of the nut with a brass brush and contact cleaner. Allow to dry, the reassemble and carefully retightening the nut. Note that the torque specification for the nut is just 6.5 ft. lbs., which is not much past hand-tight. Several members have snapped one of their threaded studs off the car body by over-tightening the nut.

Another possibility is that the rear sensors may have been affected by pressure washing or their surfaces obscured by wax or some other product the detailer used.

One simple test is to turn on the engine, and with the transmission in Park, put an ear close to each sensor. You should hear a soft "clicking" sound. If you hear no sound, either the sensor is not receiving power or the sensor has failed. It would be highly unlikely for all four sensors to fail simultaneously, so I would suspect a problem in the wiring harness or ground stud. If you don't hear clicking from any sensor with the transmission in Park, chock one of the tires and, with the ignition on but the engine not running, put the transmission in Reverse and listen to each sensor again.

Cheers,

Don

Don,
thanks for this info. I have sensors front and back. When I turn the car on I do hear to extended continous audible alarm that I have learned here at the Forum indicates a system failure. I will try listening to the sensors as a first effort and may even try cleaning the face of each with alcohol or a mild cleaner.
This is a really nice option to have.

Thanks again for the info.

Robert, plus 1 on the quicktest as advised by Don ( good info as always )

Hope to hear ( no pun intended )

Check the cabin fuse first (F32?) I think on my 05. Also consider a speaker fault.

Bob,

Sorry if I made a mistake by calling you Rob in my first reply, but that's what you called yourself in your first post!

I'm not sure what it means if the audible alarm comes on as soon as you start the engine, but if it doesn't come on until you put the transmission in gear, it may just be a problem with one sensor. Our XJR has a problem with the right rear sensor, so I get the alarm as soon as I shift to Reverse.

Hopefully the listening test will shed light on the issue for you.

Cheers,

Don

My apologies Bob, I didn't see your comment about one long audible beep before posting. Clearly your fuse and speaker are fine. Don has your back.

Glad Rob raised this issue as I have the same problem. I will go in search of the 'clicking'. Now whilst on the subject of clicking if I sit in the front passenger seat I get a rapid clicking in my left hearing aid. Yes had to bite the bullet and get 2 as only wusses wear earmuffs real men go deaf! I thought this clicking was the seat belt but not so sure as it seems to get fainter if I put my head on the centre pillar. Any thoughts?
Keep happy

Thanks Sean. Seems I am not alone. Thanks to you too Don as I found a sensor gone in the rear bumper. I had to get the Daughter to listen though! How easy are they to change and can you get after market ones that do the same job? I got a whole system from China for the X308 for less than $20. Works great.
Keep happy
Jim

My wife's iPhone has a similar static clicking when she uses it while sitting in the passenger seat of our '04 XJR. My Android does fine with no problems. I had wondered if the source of the interference might be the Engine Control Module (ECM), which is mounted behind the glove box, but according to the thread Sean referenced it's the ultrasonic sensors for the passenger side airbags and there is no known solution.

Cheers,

Don

Smile Intermittent rear park sensors

Thanks to Don B. for suggestions on what and how to check with our '04VDP park sensors. The issue we have been having is that the rear park sensors will work as designed and then will go for a period of time with a 4-5 second beep when the car is placed in reverse and then return to normal function. I will check out the trunk connector and the ground point to make sure they are clean and making correct contact and also make sure that wax or any other thing is covering the sensors. Also plan on performing the listening test at the sensors to see if any sound is being emitted for them. Hopefully cleaning the contacts and wiping the sensors will solve the issue.

Thanks
