Default Power Fold Mirror Repair

Well, it was bound to happen. A car wash attendant got to it before I could hit the switch to fold-in the mirrors. Now the mirror will not fold/unfold, as if the gear is stripped. Is there a fix for this? Are the guts easy to gain acccess?

Its a pretty easy fix. Buy a new mirror from the dealer and send the bill to the car wash. They damaged it and they should be paying for it.

But really it depends on what damage is done to it. You can pop off the mirror cover and try to see what might be the problem but if the gears are broken or stripped then you made need a new assembly as I'm not aware of replacement parts.

Thanks Muddybear. When the weather warms, I'll pop the cap. I fear the gear mechanism may not visible. If it is not an easy fix, the dissection will at least make me knowledgable when hunting for a more affordable (than new) used, salvage mirror.

Can you hear the drive motor when you try to fold/unfold? If not it might be poor electrical connections. Strip down, clean out with electrical contact cleaner, relubricate, clean out the hinge area of all the white products of corrosion, lubricate that with lithium based grease and try again.

His last activity was July 2014, he probably sold the Jag soon after. Stripping down the wing mirror is relatively easy for cleaning and checking.

That maybe your first plan of action.

Sorry, life happens. My uncle passed away and left his old car to me. So, the Jag has been in storage. I can hear the motor, but I suspect the nylon gear is stripped. It’d be great if the gear is serviceable... serviceable without complete removal of the mirror (with its requisite removal of the door trim).

It is not hard to remove. Since you are in Michigan there is a fair probability that there is salt damage inside the mirror assembly. Do a search using the term : The Fun Begins!
