Default Quick Question - How to I remove the rear-view mirror

Title says it, I'm talking about the centrally mounted rear-view mirror on the inside of the windshield. As per an earlier question, I want to swap the auto dimming mirror with and auto-dim + compass mirror.

Thanks!

Pull straight down inline with window surface. Disconnect wiring connector from behind center overhead console. To reinstall slip onto mount, and there are 2 rectangular slots in the mirror base. Using a very small flat screw driver, slip in 1 of these holes. Youll be catching part of the mount on the window and leveraging the mirror onto the mount...be carefull we break probobly 3 winshields a year doing it and we know how.. Although ive never done 1 in 11 yrs

Default Thanks Brutal!

Got the old one off and the new one (with compass) on in about 5minutes. Worked just like you said (minus the broken glass!).

Thanks again

Hi klopes,

What worked for me was to grasp the stem and carefully twist the mirror about 45 degrees around the axis of the mounting point (either direction) while pulling downward. Take care not to pull too hard or you can stress the electrical harness or break the windshield. This method works in our '93 XJ40, '04 X350, and '04 BMW.

Be prepared to fiddle a little to disconnect the electrical connector(s), and don't forget to reconnect it or them when you reinstall the mirror.

Cheers,

Don

when you say twist the mirror ,do you mean twist the mirror or the roundish plate attached to the mount on the glass ?

Grasp the stem of the mirror, the part between the actual mirror and the mounting base, and twist or rotate the entire mirror assembly as though you were turning a faucet handle. The mirror will just snap free of its mount.

See photo 5 in the photo album at the link below. These are photos of our '93, but the principle is the same on the X350:

Cheers,

Thanks Don B! Your pics made it simple to swap from my stock mirror to the compass mirror. I had the old one off, and the new one on in a matter of minutes!
