Default Suspension knocking

Hi all. New member here. I have a 2005 xj8l and love it. I started to get a knocking noise from the left side area right in front of the drivers position. My local jag dealer told me the left upper control arm with ball joint is worn. Cost is $1100 with labor and tracking. He told me there are no aftermarket units made and they cannot be rebuilt. My question is this correct or are there any available and can they be rebuilt? I am pretty handy and have access to tools and presses etc... Any advice is welcome.

Also own 3 other cars and 6 motorcycles I buy and refurbish. Thx.

Are they kidding ? Just look at the recent posts on here re suspension arms. Here in the UK there are several suppliers of Jaguar parts and these are no way that costly, although they are not cheap either.

All the bushings are available with the exception of the upper ball joint, check rockauto for all the parts.

Most only need the upper bushings in the A Arm and these are available from rockauto
If you need the ball joint you need a new arm (which comes with bushings)
Order the 2006 Lincoln LS upper A arm from Rock auto and save a heap of money

There has been sever recent treads on this

PS as soon as all my parts arrive ill be rebuild the front end as well as the brakes, hubs and trans filter
Ill then have spare old lower and upper arms to cut up and get the parts out of
I can then get dimensions and start searching Skf/Timken ect for replacement part numbers not sure what will turn up but worth a shot for the future

Cheers

I kept my upper arms when I was the test dummy for the Lincoln arms. I plan to refurbished them as well for next time.

There sure as he'll have been a lot of these posts lately. If you use the search features you can find all the information you need..

Try; control arms, upper, suspension, bushing, etc. It is all there.

Edit: not trying to be a snob but there are like three different threads on the very first page with the answer to your question. :-)

Default Thanks

Thanks for all of the answers. I didn't realize this was such a common fault. I'll research better next time.

Default It seems solid original suspension is the exception

I purchased a 2006 XJR a few months ago. Noticed it felt a little "loose" when driven.
My wife drove it one day and passed me walking the dogs. I heard a steady squeak from the rear suspension.
Crawled under and found the sway bar link rubber was deteriorated. Ordered some and took to my trusty frame/front end shop.
The call to come look was eye opening. The ball joints were all tight, but the boots were all cracked. Same with tie rod ends, rear toe adjusters, many of the control arm bushings.
I have an Audi A8 and thought it was an issue to replace front upper control arm bushing every 60,000 and sway bar links at 75,000.
These Jags seem to have a defective rubber speced. It is hard to believe something caused all rubber suspension parts to deteriorate. Any seeing all the people needing control arms confirms. Especially seeing people replace some at 40,000.
I thank Naso for finding the Ford arm are the same. But expect all the Lincoln Ls/Ford Thunderbird owners have the same problems.
Got in the first Ford control arm last week. It was definately a Lemfoeder part. Extremely high quality. Bushings from the off brand eBay suppliers are almost as expensive as new arms from discount Ford dealers.
I hope redoing mine completely tightens up the ride, and goes another 100,000 miles. But that is 1500.00 in parts and another 500.00 labor to replace everything.

That control arm you need is 120.00 USD at Rock Auto. This is Lemforder brand. They are the OE for Jaguar, Audi, and many other European vehicles.
Labor is hard to say, dealer may be 1.000.00. Where I go 200.00 would get it replaced and an alignment.

No harm done brother, you will find that probably 50% of the posts in this section are suspension related threads, and 70% of those are already answered questions.

I think folks forget that there is a search feature lol.

Like the other guys said, go oem ford part overy an ebay clone as they are round about the same price.

Also, just forget about Jaguar service depo dude, if you look at my thread " nasos-xjr-diary " you can see I just replace the entire suspension bar a few odd ends...

I called Jaguar and asked how much to fix, they told me 5000$ in parts, 3000$ in labor.

I had it ALL swapped out, air suspension to coilovers included, which was not in the jag quote, for under 2k.. and realistically it was less than that because of lucky circumstances.

Go to a regular *** suspension shop. It is a 1.5 hour job max. If they start to give you the typical "oh well its a Jag it may take longer." Go elsewhere.

My well-known expression for the X350 suspension bushes is "unfair wear and tear".

Ford moved Jaguar cars onto their own suspension systems and suppliers, but never moved over the price structure !! Hence you can buy identical Ford parts for far less money than Jaguar dealers charge.

Thx everyone for the info, I checked Rockauto and found this number LEMFORDER Part # 3063101 for the left upper control arm and LEMFORDER Part # 3063201 for the right side, are these the correct ones for my 2005 Jag xj8l? Sorry to ask again but want to be 100% sure these will fit without issues. Thx

Hi Supersport6,

Those are the correct Lemforder parts, and since Lemforder is the company that made the original control arms for Jaguar, they're the ones I would personally put on my car. But if you're interested in less expensive options, check Rock Auto's listings for the 2005 Lincoln LS, which uses the same control arms. Dorman and Mevotech offer similar parts for less money, but for some reason Rock Auto doesn't include them in the Jaguar listings.

Cheers,

Don
