advice needed
Hello,
I own an X300, 1994. I have been told by the MOT inspector that one of the rear wheel bearings has too much play in it.
Is this bearing a taper bearing that can be adjusted or a roller bearing that needs to be replaced?

YOu'd be better off posting this in the X300 forum, as you're likely to get X300 experts with detailed knowledge give the info. AFAIK, however, they're ball bearings set up with about 2 thou of play. There must be play to ensure the things dont wear out prematurely. Excessive play means they are probably worn out. Adjusting the play is almost as much work as replacing the bearings, as it's not dome from the fron, so you have to remove the drive shaft to get at the spacer.
Welcome to the forum,
Sorry to hear about the MoT. Is it a Failure or an Advisory?
Depending on how fast you need to fix this, options are rebuild or exchange. There's a company in Colchester offers
an exchange service.

Each rear hub has two opposing tapered bearing with a spacer between. Various thickness shims between the spacer and one of the bearings are used for adjustment. So....disassembly is required to change the shim and take up the slack. If there's any doubt as to the condition of the bearings it makes sense to replace them. They're probably worn
The spec is for a couple thou *preload*.

Thanks to those three great guys that replied, I can see that this works so I'm glad to be here!!
Does anyone know how to do this work, remove the rear wheel bearings, how do I start?
Do I remove the big nut in the middle, dismantle the drive shaft. I'm not a complete idiot I just haven't got a manual on this car.
Can anyone help?

If you go to the top of the X300 section there's a quick link section where you'll find the service manual download
