Default Strange Stereo Fault

I`ve got a `95 X300 with the 6 disc CD changer in the boot, got in the car today and none of the head controls would work, the cassette still plays, and the CD still plays, but I can`t do anything from the head unit, not even changing the volume,or even turning it off.
It`s been fine before,is there a fuse or something for the head unit,or is it something else ?

The on / off volume knob is a encoder device that can be changed

They come in different shaft sizes

The following pic is a example but not the exact size needed

It is a full-on internal repair to replace that knob. Every AJ9500 radio has had or will have that problem. Surprised to hear one was still working until now!

One solution is to wait a day or two. The head unit will start working properly again, when it is ready.

Since you have the premium system you have the trunk mounted final amplifier

Place your hand on it after a while that is gets warm indicating it is turned on and a fuse in the trunk

The other 2 fuses are in the left heelboard fuse box I believe

There have been problems with the round 8 wire cable from the head to the trunk components as the cable gets pinched , but that is a dig to get to

The encoders come in the same pinout configuration but different shaft sizes so is a catalogue search through

once one is found recommend liquid soldier and a heat gun to resoldier

When my premium system cut out, I noticed the aerial also retracted, although there was still power at the head unit, just no sound. The part of the head unit which controlled power to the amp ( separate from the encoder) was at fault. I gave the amp an accessories fed power supply, and all is well, with the only side effect being the amp is always on when the key is on, which it would be 99% of the time anyway.
