Default X300 XJR RACK Centre/ Anti lock light

Hello!

I checked the open threads but I did not find the answers for my question.

I have X300 XJR LHD /1995

Short story:
  • Rack started leaking so decided to send to renew it
  • I disassembled and I could took out
  • Sent for renew
  • Got back after few days
  • I put back with new axial joints and with new ball joints
  • Assembled back in the car

(I knew I have to go set the tyre toe but I wanted to test it, no leakage etc…. )

I realized that steering possibility is not same to right and left directions. Less turning possibility to right than to left.
Furthermore after 600m two control lamp started to light. Anti Lock / Traction control

What can be the problem?
  • When rack was out, we did not turn the steering wheel, it was locked.
  • When I got back the rack it seemed to be in centre but when I want to connect with steering joint I had to turn a half on the rack to be in position.
  • How can I set rack in centre position? Step by step please.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Parker!

I really appreciate for the attachment! It is useful.

However I do not really know yet, that should I disassemble the steering rack to set in centre?

What is the screw 40. on the picture?

What do you think is it possible that company who made the renewing for me did not assembled in proper position the rack and that is why the centre is not good for me…?

I saw in other threads that you are expert of Jaguars 😊

What do you think the lighting traction control and anti lock is connected for my steering rack problem?

Because before I removed the rack I never seen lighting this lamp, but after I put the rack back and driving few hundred meter is start to lighting. (I do not push brake just accelerate till 40-50km/h)

Thanks!

I always hated to send racks for rebuild because they NEVER center the racks properly.

I always center the steering assy then attach the column. If the column is only located ONE WAY, then I disconnect the upper column in the cabin to set the steering wheel and cancellation module to center.

Reattach the upper and lower columns to get everything 'on-center' again.
The bad thing is that if you install a 'good-used' original part (or someone else's rebuilt part), you will need to do the same thing to get it aligned again.

Hello Motorcarman!

Thanks for your reply!
I see. This is my problem too that this column is only one-way type, and if you turn one is too much....
I afraid that maybe this is the only way to do it... what did you wrote.
I tought there is some possiblity, screw out, put in centre, screw in but it is not so easy... it seems....

To center the rack it must be done upon assembly and the pinion is set with the centering bolt/screw.

You just need to disconnect the upper column from the lower column and recenter the steering wheel/cancellation module (clockspring)

On later designs of the brake anti = skid systems there is a input of the steering column turn position and a car twist ( yaw ) sensor

That is not the case with the X300

See page 95

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepairPhotos/jagxj1996.pdf

An easy try is to clean the wheel speed sensors front face of built up metallic debris different then the connectors

In pulling out the plastic bodied sensors they break if pried out too hard

Motorecarman had a suggestion of pushing the sensor out with a long screwdriver from the inside of the wheel hub assembly

You can do this without jacking up the car with a 10 mm socket for the sensor mount bolt on the top of the hub

Hello Parker2!

I have a connector to rack with 2 wire. This is a transducer. If the rack was not in centre it can't cause the phenomenon that anti lock and traction control is lighting?
I already removed the sensors which came out easily and cleaned well with special electric cleaner spray. Nothing changed yet...

I see! Many thanks for help!
Yesterday I checked the renewed rack and center was not in the same position as before (with a half turn it was in other position).
Today I removed and bring back to the service who renewed it and asked them to put in center because I won't disassembly the whole steering unit or they pay it...
It seems I will give back tomorrow so evening I will put back.
During this time I also found a low pressure hoose (rack to cooler) which was leaking a bit and also send it for renewing.
At least Friday I will see the result and hope I can close this part of my Jaguar's life and start an other, to change the starter motor and then dozens other

The wheel speed sensors will read 1300 ohms as a fundamental meter reading

If you spin the wheels by hand in the correct direction a meter will see 1.0 volt AC

The wire pairs are marked on the diagram as the 4 different colors

Your brake switch is pin 20

There are 2 separate brake switches in one package at the brake pedal , one for the brake light and the second for other systems

There is a 3rd parking brake switch on that handle but is not used in this system

So finally, I disassembled the steering wheel and cancellation modul and put in centre. This was the only way to put in centre the steering.

The rack issue is closed. I installed the rack after the company who renewed tried to put in centre but they could not. LOL
I removed the steering wheel put centre and put back. I had to change two low pressure hoses because they were old there were some leakage.
Now seems everything is ok.
No oil drops and steering in centre.
But sometimes I hear the pump now so I think this will be the next which will be renewed
Many thanks for the help!

You can buy replacement seal kits for the pump, which can be replaced by a competent "home" mechanic, unlike the rack seals.
