help engine questions
2000 xj8 4.0 wires burnt to crank sensor now engine is dragging like a bad starter or week battery. have replaced wires to crank sensor , do I replace engine , or is there something else I can do, Thanks for any help or input
"wires burnt to crank sensor"= Do you really mean the wires were burned to the crank position sensor on the bottom of the bell housing? If so, what burning road were you driving on? I would say it is just short of impossible to imagine a reluctance sensor wire harness having enough current to burn the wires. Not disputing what you say (exactly) BUT something seems amiss here.
Apparently, it was the wires behind the power steering pump that caught fire, when his son was driving.
Have you checked the earths and the power connector at the false bulk head ?
But am also a +1 on getting the codes pulled and post them up.
Otherwise it is all just guess work

Is your mechanic a Jag specialist, or at least a foreign car specialist? Please ask for the compression figures and post here.
The two statements disagree.
I think you need a new mechanic.
"I think you need a new mechanic. "
++ on that. Either you have misunderstood him, or reported info from other places as coming from the wrench, or he is incompetent as hell!
It is highly unlikely a new engine is needed. Moreso a new engine would not fix any of the problems you described.
