I've moved your post from the General Tech section to the XJ (X308) section where it will get greater visibility and members/techs familiar with this model can best assist

regards,
Steve

I like the rubber seals much better than gaskets. It's the same with the valve covers and the water pump. You just smear some a little Vaseline on them and tighten just enough to squish the seal. 8 Nm equal 5.9 pound feet of torque - not much.

You might want to consider changing the thermostat tower to the aluminum type available from many sources like Welsh Enterprises. This is because the plastic part becomes brittle with age and is liable to crack when you change the thermostat.

forum member xjay8 uses a 2 way suction pump to remove enough coolant to do repairs:

The only Hand suction pump that I could find is on the Harbor Freight website

Looks like you have a local Harbor Freight store (1460 South Broadway, Santa Maria, CA 93454 (805) 922-4337)

Hi Jim,

Are these instructions similar for the XJR Supercharged (2001)?

The XJR thermostat is not in a tower, it's in the crossover pipe where the left hose connects. Oter than that, the procedure is much the same.

Thanks Jim for the diagram - looks like it's going to be easier than the non-supercharged versions

Actually both models are really simple, 3 bolts on each. The problem with the normally aspirated car is the plastic housing. Your car doesn't have that problem to deal with, so you're lucky.

But with either model, I don't even take the radiator hose off. I just remove the bolts, pop the t-stat out, put in a new one, bolt it back up. Good to go.
