the SLCM doesn't work on my XJ8 1998... The dealer ask for 800$ to change it... but I found some used ones on ebay for around 150$... how complicated is it to change it and where is it in the trunk on this 1998 model... I check around the gas fuel dispenser but didn't see it... ?? Then I'll have to reprogram my 2 remote control.

The module is under the fuse block, nect to the battery , in the trunk. Whether you need to have it programmed for the key transponder, I know not.

Well, did you get the fleabay unit and did it need programming?

 

If the model number of the module is the same as the existing one, you only have to reprogram your remote controllers... easy to do.

 

I got one with differing part numbers. does this need programming at a *********** or is there an easier way?

 

we're talking "security module" so no, there isn't an easy way, it's something that a main dealer only can do, unless there's a very good Jag independent service centre that has the IDS system the main dealer uses....

 

My 1999 has a problem with locking and unlocking...I have changed the batteries in the key remotes but still it takes several hits on the key remote to get it unlocked...is the security module going bad? Is this costly?
Any suggestions please...

These kind of modules SELDOM get progressively worse- they work or they don't. So if you are replacing with good, correct part # batteries, then I suspect the security module's antenna has become disconnected. I don't recall what it looks like, but maybe someone can chime in.

The module is not programed at the dealer. IDS will not program these modules. They come programed from where ever they come from. Now I would make sure the module matches at least the part number on your originial one. You do have to get the remotes programed. Unless you know how to program it without taking it to the dealer. I know how to program the remotes without taking it to the "dealership." Knowledge is power.

I got the same problem with both remotes of my 99 XJ8.
I put new batteries in - no change in behaviour.
What happened was that in the key fobs the contact surface of the buttons got smeared with some greasy oily stuff from the rubber of the buttons.
So there was bad connection when pressing either one of the buttons.
I cleaned everything with a cotton swab and some alcohol (razor cleaner actually) and everything works great again.

Hey folks,
01 XJ8 - I can lock and unlock my doors by using the key in the drivers door, and I can unlock the doors with the button on the dash. When I push it again though, and it should re-lock the doors, all I get it a clicking sound. My car is also stuck in valet and I can't get it to go into programming mode for remotes. Do you think that it might be a faulty security module? I've checked all the fuses and found nothing... I'm close to my wits end on this one...

 

I too have a bad remote. When I bought the car it came with 1 x working remote and the second one was covered in tape. The second remote was described as "just needing a new battery"
I have replced the batteries (2) and still it appears to be a non worker. Again I opened it up and gave the contacts a bit of a clean but it remains Karput'
Now there has been some mention of an "Antenna" but I see no evidence of this. Am I missing the point ,,,?

 

I have same problem, done everything I can think of, what is the correct way the battery should be installed ?, could this be a valid point to most of these questions.
Can someone post correct battery insertion method is: what face goes up and what face goes down against the copper circle on the circuit board.
