I have just bought a Jaguar XJ8 / 2000 - it has this transmission/gearbox noise when shifting, but only when it cold.

Any suggestions ?

Time for you to read up on the common fault on the circlip/A drum and solenoid valve, every XJ/XK8 has a gearbox rebuild in its life....sad to say but true.

How many miles on the car?

We have finally discovered the error to this noise.

There was a small crack inside the valvebody. So when we replaced the valvebody, the gearbox is working perfect. With no noise.. ;- )

How much did you pay to replace the valvebody? I've had two transmission rebuilds in my 2001 XJ8.

I paid around 1000 $ for the refurbished valvebody, and around 500 $ for the installation.

Did you replace the main pressure valve in your tranny or only the A drum? The A drum is a symptome. The pressure valve the illness.

We only replaced the valvebody. (that is what it said on my invoice - and I got the broken valvebody with me)

 

That was quoted from Holybananas. A new valvebody is a good base. But if he has had his 5hp24 rebuilt twice, then it sounds to me like they aren't replacing the problem but only the broken parts. Kind of like taking a painkiller after breaking your leg but not getting the broken leg seen to...
