Well, I hired a "mechanic" to replace my fuel pump on my 2000 XJ8. He pulled out the tank without disconnecting the fuel lines. Fuel leaking everywhere. I can only assume the clips are trashed and maybe the lines, too. I'm afraid the damage he's done will cost me ?X more than the original problem.

There happens to be a local private party parting out their 2000 XJ8 and I can pick up their gas tank with working fuel pump for $75. Seems like the best partial solution. I say partial because I'm not sure if I will need to buy new fuel hoses, too. Then I need to hire a real mechanic to install the new tank and fuel lines.

What do you think? What other possible damage I should worry about?

Sounds like you are on the right track.

 

Just make sure they don't hire the same guy to remove THAT tank to sell to you!!!!!!!

Also be sure to tell them about removing the lines BEFORE the tank is pulled forward.
You might also get the fuel lines from the same car because I think new ones from the dealer are NLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The little retainer clips in the tank bottom are removable and replaceable so if that is all that is wrong you might get away with just replacing them or sell the tank with the new clips to recover your money.

The fuel tanks CHANGED from the 2001 MY onward.

You don't say what MY you have.

I noticed in your New Member introduction that your car is a 2000 XJ8. It's a good idea to add this information to your signature line so others don't have to ask or guess (and it can make a big difference in the accuracy of the replies you receive).

Hover your cursor over your username in the upper right corner of this page, and in the dropdown menu click on User CP. In your Control Panel, find Edit Signature in the left column under Settings & Options. Add your model year and model, 2000 XJ8, and any other information that may help others help you, and then save your signature.

Hey Mark. In general, I would agree with you, but in this case, his work was so egregious that I would not let him near it! I also sense he might have been a "mechanic" on the side.

Which is sad because you have people like my father, a machinist who has worked on the side on exotics, prewar classics, etc. He has no certifications, but he has an impressive body of experience and knowledge.

This guy was a hack. When you encounter resistance, you don't rip on crap.He also should have road tested after the fix, found his mistake and owned up and made it right. How a shop handles a mistake can turn a negative experience into a life long customer who makes referrals.

 

I had the return line shear off in the middle of the bead when I was trying to disconnect it during a recent fuel pump replacement, which resulted in a rather significant fuel line rebuild project. I won't go into all the detail but I somewhat easily fabricated new fuel lines from the wheel well at the fuel filter. Made any future fuel tank removal a much easier task. If the clips you refer to are the fuel line clips on the bottom of the tank, they are easily replaced and available at most auto supply stores. I don't see the need to replace the whole tank, particularly one with a fuel pump that may go next week. If you are going through the process replace the pump, filter and make sure your old mechanic didn't FUBAR the fuel lines over the rear Diff. A crimp in the supply line could lead to a premature failure of a new fuel pump among other things.
