Very good work on the coil covers they look brilliant,
just for my own info what difference will the AMG solenoids make,
I take it it will make it shift quicker or stay in the gear longer,great gearbox work anyway my friend.

It shifts faster. The difference is most notable at part load. At full load it still definitely shifts faster but the difference is less marked compared to the original brown tops.

The most alarming thing is when you're crawling to a halt and it shifts down and jerks. If you take it out of sport mode, however the shifts are less abrupt, for when you want to drive sedately.

I did have the car with 'ATC light' coming on through the upshifts at one point!

Default What I've Done This Week!

So... I'm thinking in my case this thread should be called, "What did you do to your X308 THIS WEEK?"
I won't mention any names, but a very big fella, whom I dearly love AND who just so happens to wear a pocket knife on the outside of his jeans, gouged my wheel...
Anyway, we purchased a new/used eBay steering wheel and last weekend, I started researching how to replace it myself. I found some helpful instructions on here and so I joined up!
Monday - Removed the airbag, ran out of steam, and went to bed!
Tuesday - Manged to get the wheel off - very proud moment! Decided I should use my buttons, since I know they work. I started taking them off to put on my replacement wheel. I was being super careful, got them off, and when I picked up my old wheel to move it out of my way, two very, very tiny silver caps rolled out from SOMEWHERE!! I looked all around and I have NO idea where they came from, or if they're important? Now, I'm too afraid to take the buttons off the replacement wheel!
Wednesday - Realized why my turn signals quit tick-tocking - a speaker wire was detached. May as well fix it since I've got the wheel off, right?!
Tonight - I may just tackle the soldering iron to fix the wire and then post in the "Where the Heck Did These Come From Forum?" to see if anyone knows what those silver caps are!

My stumble has sorted itself out, so it's running wonderful now, minus still trying to trace this 0455 mess. 60+ hour work weeks and trying to make up time on the weekends have left little time to tinker with it (no garage, so darkness is real), but the next step is to get a better look at the canisters and tubes underneath. if I can sort that out, then I might actually keep it around a while more, and see if I can make it to 300k.

So now I'm just enjoying the driving again

Default Speaker - Epic Fail

Well, I soldered the speaker wire back on for the turn signal, but it still does not tick/tock - bummed. May be time for a new speaker, perhaps?

On a happier note, I also put the new/used steering wheel on - looks great - no gouge any longer!! It was late last night and I forgot to check the buttons, so I'm praying they work!! I was going to test-drive it this morning, but it rained last night. I can test the radio buttons tonight, but I'll have to wait till the roads dry out to check the cruise control.

Changing the steering wheel is an easy task that can be done in under 15 minutes, the important thing is to make sure it's aligned properly on the splines. I'll be taking mine off and refitting it next week because it's slightly off centre and it's annoying me. You should disconnect the battery and wait at least 15 minutes before starting work in case it triggers. I'll be doing a lot of other work the same day too so big update next weekend.

Default Oil change etc

Changed the oil as it was looking quite nasty and that was only since a change in January this year. I had used a cheaper oil and I think it showed. The engine was quite laboured recently. Used mobil 1 this time round though. Used engine restore again too. Runs much better straight away.

Flushed the transmission by emptying the sump again. Think I didn't get the level right last time because I'm sure I could hear pump cavitation on heavy acceleration.
Sprayed the air tubing with damplast, hopefully sealing any cracks. It does seem to run better now. I use that around the coil covers too.

Shop's back open from the storm, so I had my car waiting first thing this morning. Wheel bearing,alignment,pressure test the cooling system to pinpoint my small leak, oil change & state inspection. I should be sitting good here soon.

Did some track work on Saturday, driving home I heard a sound from the rear and thought ‘I know that sound’ sure enough the rear pads were down to the steel, must have just had enough meat on to last the final 15 mins on track. Decided to take the rear calipers off to clean them up. While they were off I removed the rubber sleeves that the guide pins slide in. This is where I discovered that there was rust forming on the bore where the rubber slide sits. That would cause the slide pin to hang up if left to develope. Luckily the rotors were not too badly scored and cleaned up with a light scim. Also cleaned up the tyres where they had picked up marbles from the race track.

Love it when Jag goodies arrive in the mail, Engel Imports w/ the new V8 pillar badges, after the shop work's done I plan on a thorough clay,wax,chrome polishing etc. detailing. New badges including a spiffy green trunk release button !

The '03 XJ8 I purchased already had the broken hood opening lever. It is plastic, and probably broke due to age and heat.

The only way I could get my hood open is to remove the old latch assembly (held on by two 13MM nuts, I think) then reach up inside the area under the dash for the second cable. When mine broke, the cable went way up inside the dash area, and it was hard to reach.

I found two of them at the local Pick-N-Pull, and harvested both of them. The one I put back in my car, I coated with JB Weld to help the plastic not fracture like the original one. Hope this helps.

Yep, I caught the bug, got the seed planted and now have an uncurable Jag infection after riding in my friend's XJ8 VP. I now have my own '03 XJ8 with 130K miles on it. And, when I am done playing with this one, I WILL be looking for another one.

On mine, I had two problems left after the other work I've already done. The SRS light was on, and Victor's Jaguar in San Antonio diagnosed it as a bad module (code B1342). I also had the low coolant sensor bypassed since the sensor in my coolant reservoir didn't work any more.

I replaced the bad SRS module (part #HNC9666AE) with a used one I got off of eBay. Good news is, the module does NOT have to be programmed. As soon as I reconnected the battery and started it, the system read the new module, and no more SRS light on the dash! I also replaced the coolant reservoir, since the LOW COOLANT sensor is made into the reservoir.

And, after all the tools are put away, the black diamond that used to be a lump of coal when I bought it got a wash and quick detail. Wow, these cars are something else.....

Over the past couple weeks or so...
New shocks up front (to match the fresh rears). Not as noticeable an improvement up front as there was with the new rear shocks.
Got a glasses holder from a junkyard x308 to put on my bench pegboard at work:


Installed a hitch finally, finally get to ditch the trunk-mount bike rack. Looks great with the rack/bike being wider than the car, and extending an already long car another few feet.

Thumbs up Mechanical Noises...

Rather chuffed that the following noises have gone:
1. light ticking/chattering noise coming from the vicinity of the camshafts.
.... gone after changing my engine oil. Took about 30 miles easy driving after the oil change.
2. transmission noise only under heavy acceleration, probably of the pump straining for fluid.
.... gone after topping up to the correct level, with the car perfectly level.
3. Pounding noise from my head.
.... gone after getting rid of the above. :-)
