Default XJR X308 leaking oil from rear

Hey guys,

How are you doing?

I have an XJR which is leaking which i believe is engine oil.
It seems oil drips from the transmission housing?
Could be the rear main seal but there is a connector above where it's dripping what is covered in oil also.
The bolt of that connector is tight.
I don't know if that connector could leak.
Please see my video, maybe you can push me in the right direction.

Thanks

Maybe coincedence but the leak started after an oil change and it seems they filled it up with too much oil?

Dipstick

If you have eliminated valve cover gasket leakage there are two common sources: The rear main seal and the oil gallery plug above the rear main seal.

Yes i think that are the only two options if it leaks in that area.
It started after an oil change and they added more than one quart too much oil in it.
I drained that quart and will keep an eye on the leak.

Since this XJR has done 220000 miles i won't be spending loads of money on it but keep it running and in decent condition.
If the leak will get worse enough maybe i will go on and replace the rear main seal and oil gallery plug.
It seems not to leak while driving but leak a few drops after standing still after some hours.
Maybe it takes some time before the oil collects in the bell housing and starts dripping.

Only thing that is puzzling me is that it still leaks after parked for 24 hours, let's say 4 drops of oil.
Where do i have to look for camcover leaks?
I can see it leaks a bit from the side (drivers side) but i guess it should leak from the rear if it drips from the bellhousing?
But i don't see any obvious oil on the back of the engine at camcover level.

If it's leaking from the side it's probably a cam cover. try running your hand around the back of the gasket area.

What weight engine oil was in there prior to the oil change getting done? What weight oil was put in it after it got changed? More conventional oil is going away and the thinner synthetic oils are now the new conventional. Even my car has some oil leaks now due to the change.

Definitely start with replacing the cam cover gaskets. While the bank 2, left hand cam cover is off, use a 3/32” (or metric equivalent) drill bit and make sure the part load breather is free flowing to reduce the chances of a leak.

Yes, it is definitely true. The newer synthetic oils will find places to leak
that the old conventional oil never found. The first time I used synthetic
in the Buick...it drove me crazy...(no pun intended)

Hmm they used 5w30 full synthetic oil the last time.
Previous oil was 5w30 also but i don't know if it was full synthetic as well, this is the first oil change i did since i have the XJR.
Anyway, booked her in at a Jag specialist for a non working AC and they will check the oil leak as well.
Will check for excessive camcover leaks first!

Thanks guys.
