Front and Rear Windscreen
Hi All,
Please tell me if this sounds right. My 83 XJ6 is currently at the body shop getting rust around the rear windscreen fixed and then a repaint of the entire car. The body shop called to say that the glass guy they use says he will most likely destroy the rubber seals and chrome trim around the front and rear windscreen to be able to pull out the glass. He says the job will take 5 hours and he wants a fee of $1,000 to pull the glass. I am, of course, having trouble finding the replacement chrome pieces for the rear windscreen. Does anyone else find this odd that these pieces would be destroyed and that it would be a 5 hour job? Thanks!!

The stainless steel trim pieces can be cut out of the rubber and saved…… but it takes lots time and patience. They are delicate. If, by chance, a previous installer glopped a bunch of urethane on them then that adds to the time as it all has to be cleaned off.
I myself have spent several hours removing the glass.
Cheers

I have plenty of the front and rear chrome on hand.
They are time consuming to get out, but not so bad once you get the hang of it.
If the time comes that you need them, I'll be glad to help...

Here in the UK I had both my screens taken out for re-sealing by a nationally known windscreen replacement company. One of their older fitters had done them before and managed to remove and refit both screens without causing damage. He used new rubber seals but did no damage to the stainless-steel trim and didn’t suggest that it was a possibility. They did them for their standard charge of £204 GBP (approximately $260 USD) each which seemed reasonable.
Perhaps try finding an ‘old school’ windscreen company to do the job.

I cut the front windscreen seal out of my S3 XJ6 with a piano wire. My son inside the car and myself outside.
That did not damage the ss surround.
I did use a professional to put in the new windscreen as it is glued in place and is part of the overall structure of the car.
But I did the preparation of cleaning up the body work and surround so the pro. only had to do the fitting.

I don't list a lot of larger parts on my site due to shipping costs varying so much depending on where the parcel goes.
If you want to send me an email (david@everydayxj.com) I'll be glad to help with those...

I didnt realize this was a big issue. I know that not breaking the glass is the biggest concern for most installers. I recently had both front and rear windscreens removed for a repaint and my installer made it sound it like it was no big deal. Everything went off and on as planned.
