Default Gas tank removal and cleaning

After going on my 3rd fuel filter in 6 months i know there is crud in the tanks. After each filter is taken out the color of the liquid looks like a rusty color. What is the best way to remove the tanks for cleaning? Any special recommendations on going about the cleaning of the tanks? Thanks!

There are a couple of threads running on this already, just a couple of posts below yours.

Once the tanks are out I would block the holes and put in a couple of litres of water and a hand full of old nuts or stones and shake the hell out of it to the remove all the rust then put a tank Kreem in it. Worked for me on a couple of motorcycle tanks with good results.

Kreem | Fuel Tank Liner

Or if you are brave you could try this way.

follow the removal steps in the Factory Service Manual if you want to avoid any problems.

Ethanol is the problem. Dont waste your time with sealers. They dont work for long. Ethanol in today's fuel blends eats through them. Ethanol also makes the fuel absorb water, as the fuel heats up and sloshes around the water vapor comes out of suspension and rusts the tank as the car sits.

If your tanks dont leak....You can buy some time by cleaning your tanks with Evaporust. Filling them partaly with evaoprust and diligently rotating them and slosh them every two hours. Once they are clean they should be installed and filled with fuel to prevent flash rust.

Another option is new Spectre tanks that use a more stable steel alloy but even so you need to keep the tanks full with fuel to limit the opportunity for corrosion. This is why most new cars and boats have plastic tanks now.
