Default SU HIF7 carb leaking

Hi everyone,

just recently bought a '77 XJ-C 4.2 from it's first owner, but unfortunately both carbs are leaking at the bottom seal of the float chamber.

Can I remove the float chamber cover from underneath the car without removing the carbs from the car and simply change the seals or are parts going to drop out when I unscrew the float chamber lid?

Thanks in advance for your comments and kind help.

Truly appreciated

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

The HIF7's float bowls are only a base plate at the bottom which you have mentioned. Given that the internals of the carburetors aren't damaged nothing should fall out. Hold a rag underneath incase. I can't remember off hand how the HIF7's floats are mounted but I have a feeling via a screw from the outside?? Good luck.

Regards,

Alex

Next time, I'll read the thread title !!

You can get SU spares, (even complete carburettors), from a UK company called Burlen Fuel Systems.

hi patrick you lucky soul i love the xjc. hif carbs do have a very shallow float bowl that will want cleaning out but you may find needle is sticky hence leaking unless seal has degraded. do check fuel filter as may be muck in tanks if low mileage car.
