Default Do I have the wrong size air filter?

I am starting to get that impression since the mold for the air filter does not entirely fit inside the mold for the housing.

Can anyone confirm this? I think the air filter is too big maybe?

The housing goes on fine without the filter.

thank you

Default Sorry guys- it appears I may be an idiot

First- I think I am trying to install it wrong side facing the intake although I could swear they were installed that way when I took them off.

Second- I cannot figure out how to completely delete a post.

Your right. They are upsidedown. The baffles face the inlet horn of air cleaner to catch the crap.

Ensure that the filters are installed so that the metal bit that traverses the filter on the inside is opposite the throttles. It is there to stop the filter being sucked into the throttles and jamming them open!

That also.

Main reason is to stop the flames on a backfire from igniting the paper.

Most of us STOP cranking when the "backfire" bites, something called instinctive reaction.

WRONG, keep cranking the beast and suck it back inside the engine where it belongs.

Taught that a looooooong time ago by my Dad, coz he set fire to a Spitfire (RAAF) by stopping cranking when one he was servicing "burped", and he spent time peeling potatoes for his error.

I cut those baffles off, coz I got the BIG throttlke discs, and they JAM on those baffles at full throttle, sounds like fun, its NOT.

Those are the wrong filters... The pictured ones are for V12s without ABS. As I can see a Marelli coil, the car is from 1989 or younger... Meaning it has ABS. The metal plate should sit at the end of the filter and not in it...

you have got that the wrong way round......

the anti flash section is furthermost back towards the bulkhead for ABS cars, as the airbox is thrown forward to miss the ABS installation

the filters in the thread starter are for non ABS cars where the airbox is further back in the engine , this counts for LHD or RHD cars

If the goal is for the metal plate to oppose the throttle intakes then the second set of filters definitely fits my car.

yeah its the wrong way around, the reason it doesn't fit inside the outer section is because the filter flips around and the outer section presses up against it to keep it in place. If it were bigger the filter would just flop around inside it.

If you put the filters in and the box almost closes, try to push the point where it hinges further down, it commonly pinches on the filter and takes some fiddling to get into place.

I'm not just repeating what has been gone over, but yeah the metal is there and should be facing the TP, so it doesn't break and fall into the TB and jam it open. Also protect from backfire.

Damn, I bought so many filters of both types from a shop in the UK and they had sold me the wrong ones... That is why I misunderstood.
So I kept putting on a earlier type to my facelift XJS! What a shame.
Thank you for correcting me, without this thread I will have kept misunderstanding...

japthug

its not about correcting anyone, its about getting owners to get the right information as there are so may ' professionals ' out there that sell parts for our cars that know nothing and can give bad or wrong advise , and that can sometimes be passed on....

and i think all of us on all of these forums just want whats best for all of our cars

happy motoring

I found out why I didn't doubted it...
This is a picture 5 years ago when I first changed my car's air filter after purchase.
As you can see from the taint, the old filter on the right was obviously the one for older models.
In addition the filter was stamped "Made in W. Germany," which meant it had been there for 20 years... There will even be a possibility it had came from the factory. At least the dealer selling the new cars didn't know this fact.

So I again appreciate for the info, without this forum I would believe the opposite.
