Default Her Highness Pitches A Hissy Fit

Driving Her Highness (1990 V12 Coupe) to work this morning, got caught in traffic. Crawled along for a while, everything OK, temp gauge right on the "N." Then the temperature starts climbing. Halfway between "N": and "H," and still slowly climbing, I U-turn back for home. The engine now feels like it's starting to miss (but running on 11, not on 6). Out of traffic, the temp falls back down to halfway between "N" and "H" again, but no lower. I make it home, grab another car and get to work. Now I'm steamier than she was, because I'd just gotten her back from the shop where, among other things, the electric fan was replaced! Ideas, anyone?

What else was serviced, and what was it being serviced due to?

Check for properly bleed coolant system if that was touched.

Is the electric fan working?

What other work was done? Was the cooling system opened up for any reason? If so, I wonder if it was thoroughly bled?

Those questions being asked I suspect a clogged radiator and/or weak fan clutch. Both very common issues.

Cheers
DD

When you say the Electric Fan was replaced, do you just mean the AUX Fan or was She fitted with efans?

It was serviced due to a temperature issue, though not as severe as what I saw this morning. I was told that, at the time, the aux fan was faulty - drawing excessive current and not turning fast enough, so it was replaced. In addition, a leaky oil line at the front of the engine was replaced and, in the process, the radiator was damaged, so it was removed, repaired and re-installed at the shop's expense.

It could well be a bleeding problem; if it is not done correctly then the cooling system will get air locked.
However, if there was already an underlying problem to start with then it sounds like the work done has made it worse.

In that case, improper or unsuccessful) bleeding is high on my list of suspects. You gotta know what to do and, even then, sometimes it takes a couple tries to purge all the air.

I'd call the shop and ask if they bled the system and/or if they'd be willing to bleed it again

Cheers

Hi PnC

While I don't know how they repaired the Rad, I would have insisted on a Full re-core at their expense, as if you're engine gets 'cooked' then you could end up with a very expensive Parts Car

After I got home from work tonight, I fired Her Highness up and drove her back to the shop - and of course, she purred right along like the well-bred cat she is. Drove about the same distance, but in much less traffic. Temp right in the middle of the "N," and no sign of a misfire. I can't explain it, and I'm sure the shop mechanics think I've lost my mind. Such is Jaguar ownership, eh?

Possibly just needed to warm up/cool down a few times to sort out the air pockets, my car does this often because I'm always tinkering with my coolant filter. Next time If possible flooring it up a steep incline for awhile helps accelerate the process.

Alas, this is Michigan. Flat as a board here for as far as the eye can see.
