Default How to attach chrome behind side vents?

When I acquired my 1984 XJS it had recently been repainted but not all of the chrome trim and other pieces had been reinstalled onto the car. I am now down to the last two pieces and I am at a loss as to how to attach them. They are the vertical/slanted chrome trim pieces that are on the rearward side of the side vents (rearward of the small un-openable rear windows). I read that there were special headed screws that the chrome pieces snapped onto (?) but I do not have them and the body man who di the work used simple plain rivets to reattach the vents to the body. I have the black rubber trim pieces that I believe go between the chrome trim and the metal vents. Can someone help me out maybe with a photo of what the chrome attachment screws look like or does someone have some extras that I could purchase?

Hi- They are attached with what is known as a Tuckers Rivet. They are rivet, but there is a cup head on it acting as a snap on mount.

Cheaper to buy than ship!

Do you know if there is supposed to be a rubber filler of some sort between the chrome trim and the flat rubber gasket thing? I ask because the trim pieces I have looked like they had some sort of solid rubber on at least the ends.

Nothing aside from the flat rubber strip as far as I recall, but here’s the drawing:

I never knew what they were called, or where to get them! Thanks.

A second and slightly cheaper source if you need lots of them: 18 for 10 GBP

I wonder if there was supposed to be a little washer behind the rivets because once I got the rivets on I could not snap on the chrome strips for anything. I even had two Jaguar bodymen helping me! We ended up pulling the rubber strips off and then we could get them to snap on just fine. If there were little flat washers to help hold out the rivet heads a little bit that would have helped. But anyway, they're on and I'm happy with it.

I saw pictures of these removed and they had 2-3 spacer/washers under the rivet to allow it to slide on the seal.

I'd like to see that...any chance you'd have a link to that picture or a way of showing it? It sure would make sense to me as there was no way that the chrome was going to go on without them being raised up a little bit at least.

Wow, that was informative. I’m ready for the next time I need to remove the vents or rear glass. Thanks again!
