Default Need a/c compressor 1994 v12

Seems this compressor is a unicorn. Anyone know a source for one or to send for rebuilding?

As I recall from my 94 V12 car that was a Sanden 7 something or other.
One time I actually had two spares in the garage.
Haven't seen them in years.
I don't remember doing anything with them.

What are the last 6 digits of your VIN? Did your car originally use R12 or R134a refrigerant? If R12, was it ever converted to R134a? Does it have a Sanden compressor? Apparently, early 94 models still used R12 as a carryover from 1993. Post pictures of your existing compressor, to include both the line connections on the rear, and the pulley/clutch on the front.

A few places here in the States - EG: Rockauto - list the Four Seasons 78589 as a replacement (a couple of sites reference Sanden / Santo sd709 as the model equivalent). I haven't found a pic that shows the hose connections so far.
Maybe worth researching a bit and please do report back - I also have a '94 V12 and I am sure I will be requiring a compressor at some point.

The mounts on the 78589 Four Seasons compressor are incorrect in the picture on the Rock Auto site. That may be a stock photo, but Rock Auto normally has correct photos of the actual part.

So the mounts are correct even though the picture shows different?

I don't have this configuration, therefore I am not sure what the answer is, but over the years, I believe many have reported that other compressors will work, but the mounting configuration has to be modified on these other parts.

I am sure if you do a search on these forums, you'll find someone that has been able to modify the mount in some fashion. I don't think there are going to be any easy solutions here though.

Not a problem. I have a Sanden swapped for the OEM Harrison. I think the OEM one on your model was a Sanden so should be OK.

See post below, I did not realise the 6 litre mounts were different.

Also on the 5.3 litre, the aircon compressor drive is not part of the water pump belt drive.

No. I mean the picture shows incorrect mounts. Other pictures on the internet of that part number also show the incorrect mount, so I think it's a bad listing on Rock Auto.

Mounts on the 6.0 are completely different than the 5.3 and Harrison. Take a look at the picture he posted.

Sanden makes all sorts of different mounts, clutches, endplates, and fitting attachments for the 709 style compressors. You have to ensure everything matches.

Mike,
That model compressor has to be mounted on the V of the engine and it is integral for the belt arrangement.
If you try to mount a compressor with a different mounting arrangement you won't have any drive for the water pump.
Also, any other mounting arrangement will probably interfere with the bonnet.

Is this different on the 6 litre as well? On the 5.3 the water pump drive is part of the power steering belt drive. The aircon is separate with its own tensioner.

I have a '94 6.0L that came out of a saloon, unfortunately it uses a wide serpentine belt so the compressor wouldn't be exactly correct. I wish the '95 XJS I have had the same system. I think the wide belts have better traction than the old v-belts.
