I've got an 87 XJS V12 and don't like the option of cassette or AM/FM radio. However, I don't particularly want to change the stock radio appearance.
I've seen replica radios for older jags and other vehicles that keep the look of the radio but have modern appointments like CD, satellite etc.
I haven't been able to find something for this car.
Does anyone have any ideas? Have any of you done something in yours to solve this dilemma?

Not the perfect solution, but it works until I find a good solution.

At Best Buy I found a "cassette" bluetooth adapter. Slide it in the tape player and link my smart phone.

Not perfect, and audiophiles will have a conniption, but it allows me to listen to audiobooks and podcasts on my way to work.

 

Edelweiss, thank you for the suggestion. Is that similar to the iTrip that works off of an FM station and plugs into the phone?

 

Not sure on the iTrip, but I don't think so.

This is literally a cassette tape looking thing that slides in the slot. You connect via bluetooth, and then control everything from the phone.

There is also a microphone that slides in with a small cord. I haven't used that yet. Charge is via a USB cable. The instructions say it lasts for about four hours, but you can also plug into the lighter.

If your cassette deck isn't working well, those cheapo adapters won't work well either.

You might want to look into a FM modulator. I remember having one years ago that plugged into the rear antenna port of the radio and then the antenna plugged into the small unit which was about the size of a pack of cigarettes. There was a cord with a headphone style jack that allowed you to connect an external device of your choice. The sound was actually very clear and crisp, Some modulators work better than others so it's best to check out some reviews before purchasing one. The cassette type modulators will only be as clear as a cassette can be due to the way the sound is converted.

 

A good FM modulator will out perform a cassette adapter all day long.

My wifes car has a cheap eBay FM modulator and it works well.

 

I was completely against changing the stock radio for a while, but the benefit of Bluetooth, Sirius XM, having USB AND Aux ports for passanger and being able to talk on the phone handless thru the system ended up outweighing the desire to keep the original look . If you are interested in those amenities nothing else other than replacing the stock radio will do. I got an alpine CDHD 149BT
