Default Suggested Battery for a 1990 XJS

I had been using an Optima Red Top in my 90 XJS. It has had a battery post failure.

What are you using as a suitable battery?

I've had good luck with NAPA batteries. Get the highest amp rating that'll fit in the box. Hopefully on sale that day.

Nothing exotic required

Cheers

I think it's a group 47. I've always had good luck with Costco batteries if they have a size that fits.

Well I'm hoping the battery that's in the xjs I'm picking up this weekend, fingers crossed, is one I can find in Canada. I'm going to try and revive it first though lol. Maybe after 4 years it's ok haha.

I got mine at Canadian Tire. I think Part Source has them too, as well as Princess Auto.

Default Replaced XJS 1990 Battery

Thought I would respond to this thread should it help anyone. I recently replaced my battery in my 1990 XJS Convertible. I read a lot of conflicting information on the web regarding what battery was the right one and which size battery would fit in the metal battery tray in the trunk.

AutoZone (I’m in the USA) said I needed an AGM 34 battery. For my install I needed the positive terminal to be on the left. AutoZone did not have the battery in stock and I’m not really sure they were still stocking it. I ended up finding it at Batteries Plus. It was the Duracell SLI34AGM Ultra Car and Truck Battery | Platinum AGM | 750CCA | Group Size 34. It was $279. This battery fit just right in the metal battery tray and all is working well.

https://www.batteriesplus.com/produc...Code=VI1430611

The dimensions of the battery were: Weight: 42 lbs, Length: 10.2 in, Width 6.8 in, Height: 7.9 in

I was replacing an ACDelco 24PG which a prior mechanic threw in the car about 4 years ago. This battery never performed well, and I was glad to replace it. It wasn’t the right size. Personally I’m not a fan of GM / AC Delco anything.

As to the whole venting/not venting thing. I checked with my jag mechanic and he said the new batteries do not need to be vented. My prior battery was not vented and there were no issues. I don’t know if they make vented batteries anymore as I couldn’t find any in my research.

This is the new battery installed. Positive terminal on the left. I have the battery tied down with J Bolts and a metal bar across the top. The XJS plastic cover fits nicely over this battery.

The XJS plastic cover fits nicely over this battery.

The handle on this battery was a huge help with getting this battery in place. It is heavy.

This was the old AC Delco battery that did not work well.

I use this in my V12 coupe (& the exact same brand in all my cars):
YBX5027 Yuasa Silver High Performance Car Battery 12V 65Ah HSB027 HSB013

Yuasa Silver is in my experience pretty much always the maximum spec for any particular sized battery.

hsb013 size fits fine. There's a possibility another size of battery might be a more perfect fit/maximise capacity for available battery tray space, but I trawled all the battery specs I could find & none jumped out.
