Just wondered if anyone has replaced their window switches with the ones available from British parts? If so are they any good? Certainly cheap enough.

 

Are they Uro brand? I only have experience with those switches for a facelift car and they are junk. The spring clips are plastic instead of metal and don't fit the veneer panel.

If they are earlier switches like a Series III saloon, I have no idea then.

 

I’m not sure on the make but I bet there aren’t that many. Might try cleaning the old one again. Thanks.

 

OEM ones turn up on ebay pretty regularly, Brinny. I have bought quite a few things from this guy and he is pretty genuine and helpful.

I have to admit I saw a post of yours (I think) with this comment, and thought "Nah, how bad can they be?" Needless to say, one self destructed in a few months, with only about a dozen actual uses...and yes, the clips don't hold to the ski slope panel at all, and break almost immediately.

Lesson learned.

When I had an '88 XJS I tried some aftermarket window switches. At the time, OEM Jaguar replacements were 3x the price.

They were junk and literally fell apart after a few months

A gamble that didn't pay off

I'm curious if these present day OEM replacements are the same/better/worse that what Jaguar was offering 15-20-30 years ago.

The details are foggy but I recall reading, quite a number of years ago, that Jaguar had partnered with a major aftermarket parts vendor (Eurospares?) to handle much of the replacement parts supply for many older models. In other words, this outside company is contracting for and acquiring parts on Jaguar's behalf. Jaguar itself is one step removed. So, the Jaguar boxed/branded parts you buy today may be sourced entirely differently that they might have been ages ago when Jaguar itself was more involved in the process

Not sure, but that looks like a Uro switch. The immediate identifier is the plastic spring clip on the side, and the printed part number. The OEM switches are made by TRW and have metal spring slips on the side and no printed part number.

 

For comparison., the Uro brand is on the left, Original Jaguar (TRW) is on the right

 

Just for information classic jag spares still have these available but they are around£40 each plus vat and delivery.

Can’t help thinking a Ferrari may have worked out cheaper. I’m back unemployed and now a tier 3 lockdown. Plenty of time for cleaning and polishing coming up. !!! Then on to the xj6. You know Greg lol!!!

 

I believe I might have been able to use the guts of the URO to make my switch work again. The plastic clips are definitely a no go, but I think you might be able to transplant enough of the URO parts back into the OEM body to make it work.

Thats how I remember it anyways.

 

If you are willing to go Uro, the dirt cheapest place to get them in Amazon. $12 and free shipping presumably... I’ve bought eight for various cars and only one has failed. But those plastic side clips are terrible!

 

To update an old thread...

I finally figured out how to make the URO plastic clipped window switch fit the bezel! The clips need to be heated. I use a heater for shrink tubing and it gets the plastic just soft enough that it will indeed fit into the bezel. I had previously tried forcing a cold (or room temperature) switch through the bezel and ended up destroying the bezel.

At $12/pop, I'll see how long it lasts, but sat that price price point, it's certainly worth the gamble.
