Default Wiper motor / linkage upgrade change?

Any reason I can't swap out my original hokey cable actuated wiper system on my '78 XJ-S for the newer linkage operated system?
The motor on my is in very bad shape; I've had it rebuilt and it would work for one use / enough to pass the state safety inspection and then failed - sent the motor back to be rebuilt again (no additional charge) and once again worked temporarily until failing again. I do not care for the sluggish cable system and figured if it's time to buy a used replacement I might be best off going for the newer linkage style. Really only concerned with having the wiper operation for safety inspection and don't care about if the washer system works or not if that's a concern with the swap. Also, my park function does not currently work so I was manually parking the few times the system did work so also not a concern if that does not work.

The plug appears to be identical and if there's a change in what wires are for low & high speed I figure that's an easy adjustment.
  1. Any physical mounting concerns?
  2. Is the arm swing the same? (mine parks on the passenger side)
Thanks,
Steve

A poster here, RGP is doing the swap now, and he will doubtless post with details. It is a straight swap, just plug it in, the washers will work too. You will lose the intermittent wipe, but the two speeds and the flick wipe using the stalk will work just as before.

i wanted the wipers to park on the passengers side with a 13" blade on that side for a more "good design" look as opposed to the " oh i forgot the wipers design"
they are a straight swap but as Greg said you will loose certain functions, as the Lucas motor is reverse park and the electrolux is conventional.
to reinstate the functions you need to cut the old parking black wire at the switch, this may effect the flick wipe, i haven't checked that yet, you can get to that by removing the lower column plastic cover
but dont cut the washer black wire. you need to get a different green delay relay and replace the existing relay behind the glove box. i haven't got
the relay yet but i have cut the wire which doesn't affect the wipers working when cut, have managed to get a relay from new Mexico, i'me in the uk
and the snow has delayed it. jaguar bulletin last pages
file:///C:/Users/rex/Documents/XJS%203.6%20Service%20Wash%20Wipe%20(2)%20(1).pdf

p.s. the wiper motor unit fits in the hole, without the wheel boxes over hanging the grill, a lot easier but you want to get them so they are half way through their sweep.
p.s.s. i think the drivers side wheel box ball joint lever could do with a slight mod to lengthen it to get a bigger sweep,

I recently acquired an Electrolux wiper system for my 1985 XJS. I removed the cable driven system which was only working on one speed (slow) and installed the Electrolux unit. It is plug and play. No modifications are necessary to physically fit the unit.
However, I still have to do some additional work with it.
Presently, I have the two speeds and I have to manually get it to park.
I do not have the "flick" wipe working as yet.
I did not do any work on the wiring at the wiper switch because I do not know what I have to do or whether it is necessary.
The one I got had a burnt harness which I repaired.
There are 3 small wires (2 black and 1 red) which I believe is for the washer but do not know where to connect them. They seem to be independent of the main harness with the plug.
The unit was also missing the two spray nozzles which I plan to locate and purchase in the near future(if they are available)

Great result, Rex. At last we have someone who has actually done the entire conversion.

The hardest part is getting the glove box plastic catch back in with the spacer plate. 😊

Ok - Looking for some input if anyone can advise or has thoughts.
I rec'd the newer Electrolux linkage style motor & wiper assemble but not working as hoped; obviously buying used is always a gamble - notes and questions below.

Assemble & motor physically look to be in excellent condition and my understanding was the wiring was plug-n-play between original Lucas-cable system VS the Electrolux-linage system.
I do have power to the pins on the cowl connector when operating the wiper arm but no movement with motor.

NOTES::
  • PDF showing where I have 12v power on the male-cowl connector (low position is also hot when pulling for momentary).
  • Wire color breakdown for the Electrolux: Black / Orange / Pink / Black-Green / White-Green.
  • Electrolux Model: KSV 5035/510
  • Motor seems fine visually; Motor shaft spins freely and gear turns fine - inside is clean and no signs of rust or corrosion.
  • I did try hooking up the motor directly to a 12v battery w/ Negative to corresponding pin for ground and Positive to the corresponding pin for Low (& then High) as shown in the PDF - no result at all.
Questions:
  1. Is Low & High as shown in the PDF (car side) the same power connection points for the newer Electrolux?
  2. If correct for above RE wiring is it a simple supply of power 12v-grnd to the lower pin point and the 12v+ to the corresponding low (or high) for operation?
Sorry, I'm not an electrical guru and the extra pin connections are throwing me off some and if not critical to understand no worries.

Suggestions for trouble shooting the motor? Am I correct with the negative and positive connections on the female rubber boot to the pins that correlate according the notated diagram?
At the end of the day my primary objective is to have enough functionality for passing Texas Safety Inspection - don't tremendously care about park feature but not against working on that after rest is figured out.

Best and appreciate any input - Steve

You don't need to earth the pin to test just.clip an earth the motor
Also it will work when you plug it in to the socket but not on delay unless you have a duff motor or a wiring fault.

Thanks rgp

To measure twice - low & high-speed female plug side identical between the Lucas & Electrolux version?
Thus attached referenced pins ID'd for low & high speed correct and thus mirror points on female plug for applying 12v+ for testing?

Best, Steve

It was on mine. But no flick or intermittant. If you want to reinstate those you will need a new timer and cut the black wire on the switch, if you cut the black only without fitting the timer the electrolux stops self parking,
