2010/11 Purchasing question
Hello All,
I'm looking for purchasing advice on a 2010 or 2011 XK coupe. I'm looking at a number of them in the 35-40k price range and I'm not seeing any significant price differential between the 2010 and the 2011 models.
Of course all things being equal, I'll go with a 2011 unless anyone has advice to the contrary?
v/r,
H.K.

hksurfer,
I recently purchased a 2010 XKR, here in Los Angeles and in retrospect, I overpaid for it at $38K (about 3 months ago). It had approximately 70,000 miles on it, had some cosmetic blemishes, and some of the dreaded dash shrinkage issues, as well as beat up wheels. It had been, at the time, the lowest priced 2010 XKR that I had seen in the whole country. I hadn't really intended on buying it with that much mileage, but I told the seller I wanted to have my mechanic scan it and see if any codes came up. He brought it to the shop, and it coded a cam sensor malfunction. But more interestingly and a lot more troubling, was my mechanic's observation by listening, that he suspected that the car was getting ready to throw a rod. After the owner recovered from his shock, he realized that he had purchased an insurance policy, and three weeks later the car had a "new" engine, one out of a wrecked car with approximately 5000 miles on it. And the insurance company allowed my mechanic to do the install, so that I knew there would be no shortcuts.
Additionally, with the old engine taken apart, it appeared there was only a bad pair of rod bearings, which I have purchased to replace for about $20.00. Once all of the work was done, and I took it out for a drive, and all was well, I went ahead and purchased it. It has been in the shop for about a month having everything repaired like paint, dash wheels, tires, etc., and I customized it, as well. (see attachment below) I just picked it up a couple of days ago. There are still a few mods I expect to do over the next couple of months.
Oh, and by the way, I now have a spare engine as well as a spare rear bumper and a stock exhaust, that if I decide to sell would probably recoup close to $10,000.00, which would then make my purchase much more reasonable. I haven't decided to do that yet or to keep for parts. After I'm confident that everything with the new engine and parts is going to work out, I'll make a decision.
There are some nice cars on ebay for $40-50K, but I think you can probably find some 2010's in the upper $30's.
Where in So Cal are you?

Condition and color first. If the miles are reasonable, I would not worry about 10-11 model year. Make sure to measure the tire depth in the center. Keep in mind that tire prices between 19 and 20" is noticeable. Fully loaded cars are better investments and have the car looked over by a body shop. I wouldn't worry on mechanical pieces too much; Jaguar does a good job on that. Relying on CarFax to determine if the car was in accident is not 100% by any means. Jaguar's are one of the most expensive regular marques to insure (keep that in mind).
If you don't drive much, a car with a little more miles on it should be something to consider. You'll get "the miles back" over a couple of years to equalize it back to normal.
I plan to tally all my repair bills I had over almost 3 years of ownership. The car was hardly "inexpensive" to own, but it never left me stranded and my impression was that it's a reliable, well built car.

In the FWIW department, I'm coming up on 3 years of ownership. I've changed the oil, flushed the brakes, and done a couple of air filters. Outside of 1400 or so for a new set of tires, that's all I'm out so far. And the difference in insurance between my Z and the XKR is almost negligible. About 150 every 6 months is the delta... likely due to 2 seater vs 2+2.
