Dozens of reasons.
New battery worse than the old one.
Contacts on case don't touch battery well enough (loose prongs?) <--- Many complaints in these forums
Smart Key dead.
Okay, only a few.

Well the little tabs weren't making contact with the positive so I proceeded to bend them and then snap them off with my big clay fingers. Anyway s jammed a piece of foil under battery and got it at the right angle to make contact. A Flintstone fix but it's working.
Don't risk bending the battery prongs and breaking them!
If the battery prongs have stretched, use a CR2035 battery instead of a CR2032. They're identical except that the CR2035 is 3mm thicker and will fill in the gap caused by the stretched prongs.
Keep a spare fob battery in your glove box for when the one in your key dies.

Decimal-three mm? The things are only 3.2mm to start.
Yep, you passed test!
You must have read my Post #14 in the thread linked above. It's 0.3mm thicker, as I stated here:

And check the dates on the battery packaging! Been there.
And thanks to Stuart S, I have replaced all batteries in all fobs with CR2035 every spring. Little things like the proximity detection system not as responsive as it should be, annoy me.

Use your head! Hold your Smartkey fob to your forehead (or under your chin) and open your mouth to increase the range. Really, no kidding. Try it and you'll see.

And at the same time increase your risk of getting brain-cancer/tumors.
You can imagine the look on people's faces when they see a parked XKR and watch the convertible top go down and there's no one in the car! Then they look around and see this old guy about half a block away who looks lost and confused, with his hand on his forehead and his mouth wide open!
Thanks, WhiteXKR! That's Steve, the inventor of the remote control top.
