I know this sounds stupid, but check the oil level. It has to be done on the computer as there is no dipstick. But when I bought mine used from a private party, he had never checked it and as a result I got a new engine thrown in as it was about to blow. As a matter of practice I take any used car to my mechanic and have him read any codes that come up. Also, ask for service history.

Welcome and good luck. You'll enjoy the car. Other then having someone or a dealer looking at it just look for something that doesn't seem right. Check for wear and look for potential paint damage. Also when the car is cold and not started check the coolant level and see if it is at the full mark. Then put a volt meter on it to make sure you have at least 12.5V and after starting see if it goes above 13.5 V. Check inside of front tires for wear. Is it a CPO car?

 

Welcome to a very knowledgeable and helpful group. Two things: Take it to a body shop that is at a minimum certified to work on aluminum bodies. you can get a recommendation from your local Jaguar dealer. They will be able to spot any anomalies.

Secondly have a good indie or your local Jaguar dealer inspect the car mechanically. It is worth what ever it costs to both of these things because you are about to lay out many thousands of dollars. By the way the whole inspection process usually costs no more than $500 and usually somewhat less in the U. S. A. Good luck. When you purchase your ride you will be in for a treat and many miles (or kilometers) of smiles.

 

Thanks to all who replied. The vehicle is liquid silver on black coach work, 36,500 kilometres, one owner and full Jaguar service history. Chrome options on the air intake bonnet grills and side mirrors ( an expensive option), 20 inch wheels as well as the Adaptive cruise control( also an option I understand). Very excited

 

You've got good advice from members and notably no one has had a bad word about the 5.0ltr which should give you confidence.

I got a '10 XKR with less than 7K miles. Will see a lot more driving when my XJL goes back on the lease in a couple of weeks. The XKR is my favorite Jaguar (my 6th one) and the only one with the supercharger. The 5.0 engine is superb, smooth and powerful, particularly with the supercharger.

The cars are quite reliable with the water pump being a weak component that lots of members here had to replace. Make sure a knowledgable mechanic checks for the tell tale signs of water leaks under the plastic engine cover. On my 3-5.0L cars, thus far, the pumps are working fine.

Other than that, can't think of a component that would be prone to failure with these cars.

 

Be prepared for a new set of tires in short order. Transmission pans can leak and that's about $400-500 to fix. In general, the XK is a very well crafted car.
