Default Pinking question

The pinking developed a month or two ago. I proved this was the case by putting in a tank of super, which created a steady improvement over the next week. My question is this. I have been running the car on 95 UL for the past 2 years. With this being something that has developed, how can I cure it, without running on super continuously?

Pinking? Is that the UK version of the US Pinging?
It'd help if we all know what specific vehicle you have. Adding a signature block with the year and model would be beneficial.
ANYWAY, since ALL XKs were designed to run EXCLUSIVELY on the highest grade of fuel, why would you force it to live on inferior grades?
Running on lower grades forces the ECM to back off on timing and other such parameters to PREVENT pinging/detonation. Those are BAD things. Also, depending on mileage/wear and carbon in the engine, those parameters can change.
You really should use the higher octane fuel.

Its an 06 XK. Unlike regular gas in US (87 RON) our regular is 95RON. Book says fine to use regular and have been doing so for 2 years hence the question.

I run my 06 on 95 and it runs fine. Seems to me you have another issue.

95RON is recommended I believe. Something must be wrong.

Try OBD II for clues. Check sensors for plausibility and fuel trims (lots of threads about these).

95 RON = 90 AKI, so I was mistaken. I seemed to remember 95 was similar to 87 AKI. I blame my old brain-thing.
Still though, even 90 AKI seems a bit low for a "Performance Engine". My wife's old RX400h had 91 AKI (96 RON) as minimum.

If it's a 2006 XK, why does your Personal Profile show a 2008 XKR?

Engines with high mileage and an accumulation of carbon buildup have, in effect, increased compression and will have an increased tendency to "ping" or knock when using gasoline with too low of an octane rating.

Back in the day, the DIY fix was an Italian tune-up.

In the USA, "pinking" is when a Democrat moves further left on the color scale towards Socialism. Continue moving even further left and you turn red into a Communist.

??? Isn't the GOP's color Red?
Also, isn't too far right also considered "Lyin' cheatin' stealin' philanderin' POS Trumptard"?
No, I'm not a Dem. Also not a GOP. Neither are right about anything. EVERYTHING is best somewhere in the middle.

In this instance you're getting tripped up over terminology All modern Jaguars are meant to run on 95 Ron gasoline /petrol which in some countries is called regular and other countries super or premium. There's nothing wrong with the car and it's no wonder that it's pinging ifyou’re using regular/91 Ron fuel.

I gather he's using 95 RON but has tried higher. It shouldn't need higher.

I'm sticking with post #5...

95 RON is the standard in the UK with super unleaded being 99+

Personally I use supermarket 95 with a shot of millers ecomax (whether petrol or diesel) with this methodology I've managed to achieve 1000 miles from a single tank of diesel and 56mpg in my Audi A6 quattro 3.0 V6 diesel. Something that even drivers of 2.0 non quattro models have failed to get close to according to the forums I use

I only ever fill up when I've fuel/reward vouchers and rarely pay more than £1/$1.24 per liter, never had a problem thus far

As to pinking/pinging, remember if you're North American that the language is called 'English' so you're always going to be wrong!

Also that you are driving a British car...albeit under Indian ownership

Note to self: Mark you really need to practice the 'charm thing' more!
