Default Airbag Light on

Airbag Light came on. There is no Code Flashing. Light just stays on. Hooked up Code Reader and it said it couldn't connect. I did get a P1642 Code which I think is related to the Reader not connecting to the SRS System. I am leaning toward changing out SRS Controller. I don't want to just throw parts at the problem. Anyone have any suggestions on other tests that I could try to find out what is causing the Air Bag Light to stay on.

Could your reader talk to the SRS system before this?

I have a 97 xk8 and although it is nowhere near the year of yours I have a pesky airbag light that comes and goes. I read all the threads here about the wire harness clips under and in the seats, the seatbelt grounds, the srs module etc etc. I chased this light blindly for more time than I care to mention and ended up going to a friend of mine who runs an auto body shop with a multi thousand dollar scanner. He pinpointed the airbag code (different code than you have) to my clock spring. I found a loose connector there and stuffed foam behind it to keep the connector tight. It still shows up now and then. I had the seats out, cleaned all connectors, bought a used srs module off eBay, and got nowhere. If you have the code, research it and research it again, and it should give you a good starting point.

I never had a reason to hook it up to SRS System before. I'm assuming it would have connected.

the xk8/xkr gives you a blink code… that tells you what way you need to search. no reader needed

Light does not blink. Comes on and stays on. No blinking.

Before throwing any parts at it, maybe you could borrow or steal a different scanner? I have access to like 5 different scanners and every one of them does something different. One will read ABS but not clear ABS codes. One does certain diagnostics, but freezes up when trying to read a certain module. Another won't read the TCM. If you can establish that two or more scan tools won't communicate with the SRS module, then the module is certainly suspect.

The 96/97 models are not fully OBD2 compliant and the airbag light does not blink. Check the fuses, then the ground points under the seats.

There are at least two ARS faults that have no flash code - one when the light won't come on and one when it won't go out!

B1870 might be the one for you? The right scanner would confirm or deny that. My AutoEnginuity certainly reads the ARS sensors and codes.

Does anyone in the Pittsburgh area have a code reader that can show SRS codes for a 97 xk8?

Hey my airbag light came on and I still need to diagnose it. I do not remember all of my research findings but I do recall something where it could just be a sensor of some kind. I went in my car and sat in the passenger seat and the light came off leading me to believe I need to do more research down those lines. You may want to do the same. Sorry for not having more specific info. I took a break from this a while back as the rear window regulator went out and I had to wait forever for a refurbishment. Not a fun job to remove and replace the regulator as well!

One of the biggest problems, is the difference between the model years and the improvements Jaguar made over that time. 96 and for a few years after used first generation airbags and controllers. 03 is second generation two stage airbags, the seat belt receptacles are more sophisticated.

In my case, it turned out that replacing the Airbag Control Module fixed the static airbag light.

The 97 is not readable by any scanner . The light is a led ... you can put it out by soldering two wires to it on he back of he board and using a timer to switch two diodes in series across it. The voltage drop across them is insufficient to light the led.
