Default Engine rebuild

Hi everyone

Hope someone can help me. I have a Jaguar XKR Convertible 2002 which I am having an engine rebuild after we had some problems with the inlet valves and a blown head gasket, so while it was apart we decided to recondition the engine. All was going fine till we had to order the connecting rod bearings, I ordered the first lot from British Car Parts but the parts were longer than the parts taken off the engine and they said they were the parts as per the vin number so I went to Jaguar and Jaguar Classic and had the same problem, now Jaguar have said that they can not help any more mainly because the company, TATA, don't want to deal with models they have not produced.

Has anyone else had this problem or know were I can get the replacement parts as the car has been sitting for over four months while this has been trying to get sorted.

Have listed the part numbers and a image for reference

Hope someone can help

Rob

Old part off the car

New part supplied by jaguar

The new part is placed under the original part (top half) and you can see the size difference

The diagram shows the parts ordered from Jaguar which should fit the car but are to big.

looking at the parts list - there are 3 options (blue/green/yellow) - what are the differences between the 3 options? is it possible you ordered the wrong part

Hi thanks for the note, the colour code for the parts are correct (green) which was confirmed by Jaguar Classic and we even tried the other coloured parts but none fit this why we are having so much trouble. The engine is the original and has not had this much work done to it since it was built.

The one confusion I can think of is that 2002 is possibly a change over year in the UK to the later 4.2L engine. For us in the US, it is definitely 2003. My superficial understanding is that the UK cars seem to come out a year earlier, so maybe someone sent you a 4.2L part.

Besides more research online, maybe try and reach out to sngbarrat...

Last thing, try and locate the engine number plate. Most of us are not original owners, so there is a (remote) possibility the engine is not original...

Thanks for the post I see what you are saying and is worth trying a part from an early engine as for the engine numbers they all match up as this was one off the questions that Jaguar asked, the car itself is a Middle East spec car and this is why Jaguar Heritage got involved to check all the production details just Incase there was any changes at the factory when it was built, but a lot of the records once TATA bought the company were sent to Jaguar Heritage but again they can only tell you what is put into the system.

So, let me ask: Do you have the early 4.0 engine with the 5 speed Mercedes transmission, or the later 4.2 engine with the 6 speed ZF transmission? Does your shifter bezel show 2-3-4 or 2-3-4-5?

There is the XK8/XKR illustrated catalog here:

SNGBarratt Download Area

There is the engine book here:

Engine Training Guides

There are bearing details, including measurements to take to guide the parts selection...

This does not look entirely simple. It looks likes it keys off of the Engine Technical Data , found on a plate somewhere.

I don't think the colour coding should affect the physical size of the shell, it is only to allow for variations in crankshaft tolerances.

Some more pics of the old and new shells would be useful.

Have a look at the attached picture with some interesting info regarding the 2002 model year 4.0 engines.

You might be on to something there. Strange it doesn't show up in the parts catalogue.

See post #6 here, I guess the answer is to measure the bearing diameter.

I had the same situation when I need a rod bearing for a 2000 XK8. I ordered the replacement bearing as you did and it was too big. What I discovered was I had 4.2L block. The 4.2L uses the same piston as the 4.0L. The way they get the increased displacement is by lengthening the rod thus they made the rod bearing smaller.
I ordered parts here in CA that came from the warehouse is San Franisco through the local Jaguar dealer. I kept getting the larger bearing for the 4.0L
.
I got hold of a sales rep from Jaguar of Long Beach in Florida. He ordered it from Jaguar in Britain. After another couple of weeks I finally got the correct bearing.

Check the engine number on the side of the block, it's on the left side towards the back half of the engine, that will confirm that you have a 4.2L.

It's a pain in the rear and will take a bit of time but that is what I went through.

Good luck.
