Default Going to look at one tomorrow

New guy here.

I just started my search for the 'perfect' XK8, and I may have already stumbled upon a 2000 (though my luck never ran that way before!), and have a couple immediate questions...

1) Do they all have the nav system?
2) What are usually the biggest problem(s) to look out for? I know that's an open-ended question, but I'm thinking there's probably a few that float to the top.

I have a lot of wrench-experience with other cars, but new to the Jag. I'm studying-up to get smart, but not much time or I may lose this one (but I suppose I'll have LOTS of time to learn til I find the next one).

TIA!

Look in the stickies here
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...00/#post157643
First item is two lists of things to look for.
Yes it does have Satnav but no upgrades post 2003 are available so, unless you want to spend a fortune, your trusty TomTom is the answer.

Good advice above from Steve.

Satnav became available in 2000 as an option. A 3-gauge cluster was standard.

whitexkr did not mention that the biggest advantage to the gauge cluster is that you can add his Realgauge mod to get real oil pressure and temperature readings.

Nav was an option. Check for timing chain tensioner upgrade. My '01 with only 65k miles needed the upgrade.

My 2000 doesn't have the NAV system, i do like the look of the gauges. We enjoy going to the mountains and getting lost. Do use the trusty Garmin to get home.

Definitely the secondary timing chain tensioners are an issue for the 1996 to 2001 4.0 model years. I just checked mine on my 2000 XKR...they were plastic and cracked. Despite a pristine 76,000 mile service record by previous owners, nobody had replaced them!!?? Around $1000 for an Indy to replace...I replaced the the Gen 3 tensioners + new cam cover gaskets myself for $200. (The zip tie method is awesome!)

Also, if its a convertible, the hydraulic latch and hydraulic lines are both repairs that will eventually happen. A few hundred $$$ for a DIY'er or $1000 to $2000+ at a shop.

Both have happened to me, but have been repaired by myself or taken to a shop. Thanks to good advice on this forum I was confident in my repairs! Turning a wrench and doing most of your own repairs make these cars very affordable to own and keep up.

Good luck with finding your XK8. Oh, and my 2000 XKR has gauges.

Cheers!

Jon

Hi Growl-R, could you enlighten me about the 'zip tie method' please, as I'm looking to do my secondary tensioners soon.

Thanks,
Andy.

Andy, this thread by EZDriver should get you started. There are so many threads on this and the XJ8 forum that you could spend hours searching through them.

Hi Andy,

I used the information from EZDriver that RJ237 linked to in his reply to you. Sorry for the delayed response. I had to do a bit of holiday traveling.
Thanks RJ, for quickly giving Andy the information he needed!

I was telling my indy repair shop about the zip tie method a while back. They called me last week and had a tensioner job come in, but didn't have the cam locking tools to do the job. They asked if I had the tools. I told them no, and reminded them that I had used the zip tie method. I had downloaded the same info submitted by EZDriver from Gus's www.jagrepair.com website. Gus had the information available in a easy to download PDF file. I sent my indy the PDF and a link to the Jaguar Forum and Gus's website. THANKS GUS & EZDriver!
The shop did the customer's tensioner repair using the zip tie method and commented that it worked very well...said they actually turned the job out more quickly!

Cheers!

Jon

I concur with all comments and especially the tensioners and convertible hydraulics. I would suggest looking at the interior lighting in a darkened garage so you can see what isn't working. Not a lot of money but time consuming.

Thanks RJ237 and Growl-R. I had the right hand rocker cover off tonight and there was a little red plastic tensioner sitting there. So, she wont be leaving the garage until I fit a pair of new tensioners next week.

Andy,

Sounds like a good plan! Be sure to follow the torque specs and tightening sequences. Just an FYI...the plastic cam covers and coil pack covers will crack if over-torqued. (O.K. I admit it...I over-torqued a coil pack cover and cracked it.) Lets just say snug is the keyword when reinstalling the coil covers.

No Biggie...Torque Happens!

Good Luck and enjoy your peace of mind when you drive your car after the repairs are completed!

Cheers!

Jon
