Talking The "Hole" in the convertible headliner...

I've been meaning to post this for a while.

I've seen numerous posts asking what that head liner hole is for. Well, I'm gonna tell you.

The latch hoses that go into the latch mechanism are the weak link in the convertible top system. The pressure required at that point is ridiculously high and the latch can barely handle it. That's why the top "hesitates" at the latch.

The "hole" in the headliner is a handle for you to put your hand and assist and therefore ease the required pressure at the latch for the closing of the top.

Put your hand in, and pull down the top to the latched position...it really is that simple...

If you are having difficulty with it not final latching you should make sure that the bypass valve on the pump has not rattled loose. It is a small tee shaped fitting at the base of the pump.
The latch normally should not need any assist. You might also get some spray lube and lubricate the latch they do get cruddy.
The small opening (round hole) is to use the hex tool (located on the side of the pump) and the oval opening (hand hole) when opening/closing the top in the Manual Mode.
A loose bypass will reduce the pressure to the system and create the latch problem.

I presume that we are speaking of this hole?

It seems like there's some kind of contact in the bottom.

It's an old thread but I assume that he's talking about the oval shaped hole which is above your head in the forward middle section of the hood. I have always assumed that everyone knew it was a hand-hold for manually closing the hood if the hydraulics should fail but I've never heard of anyone suggesting that it should be used to assist the hydraulic system.

Whereabouts on the car is the hole in your photo?

Richard

Center of top, about an inch or inch and a half from the windshield header

But surely that's not an X100 / XK8?

Your signature says you have an X150. You are in the wrong forum. You want the newer XK's at https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk-xkr-x150-33/
