Default navigation upgrade

Will a 2007 or later nav unit fit a 2006 or earlier xkr? If so, anyone have experience to share?
I've already tried to update the 2005 xkr unit with a newer disc-won't load.

Afraid not Bob, the latest disc for our 1997-2006 nav systems (Alpine) are dated 2003, I think. The software/map company no longer supports that system, so we got buggered. We've posted an iso. file in the forums to download and create your own disc, if you want to try it. I can't recall the actual product code on itl...BF sounds right though for the final version.

What about actually changing the hardware with a newer unit?

That wouldn't work, the head unit, amplifier, navigation are all on the same protocol (via Alpine's brand on all of them), you can't even change the alpine cd changer for another alpine unit, they have some sort of proprietary communication that prevents that kind of a swap.

Lots of us just use the video screen for input from another GPS module. At least that way, we can stay up w/ current maps, whereon the original system will always be stuck with 2004 maps.

Does that mean if you change the audio system, the nav won't work?

Does anyone know if there were other auto manufacturers who continued to use a similar Alpine unit to the one used in the X100 series that may have compatible DVDs or hardware that are a later version than our 2003 update? Is the Jaguar hardware and DVD architecture proprietary or common to all Alpine equipment?

It may be possible, but I have not heard of anyone having success doing this.

Your known alternatives for upgrade are:

--A Garmin GVN-53 with a video input (see https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...traffic-49241/). Unfortunately the GVN-53 was recently discontinued, so it will be tough to find new, but there are probably some used ones to be had. I can supply a plug-and-play video adapter.

-Place a portable GPS unit behind the wood paneling (there a a couple of writeups on the forum on this)

-Get by with your smartphone or a portable GPS unit. Mounting it on a Kuda mount on the console is a neat way to do this without exposed wires.

-Consider converting to the 3-gauge factory option. It is a much more classic 'Jaguar look' anyway. See Navigation to 3-Gauge Conversion - TheJagWrangler

Yep, unless you discover how to power it w/o the head unit, and route audio w/o the same. More trouble than the obsolete system is worth. Keep the screen, it works great!
