Problem with Welsh front shock mounts
Got them from DCR. I actually got the whole thing from springs to struts from DCR.
Got it from DCR. Dave is a specialist of x100 cars. He has a solid reputation. So before blaming the mounts I want to check if there something else I'm missing there. Could that be due to anything else than the part failing? Maybe a mistake when it was mounted or some smaller parts failure maybe... Or maybe a part linked to the strut causing the shift. There's the base of the strut with the bushing (brand new strut so...), the top mounts (new as well), the springs (new), the wishbone, the joint sandwiched between the retaining plate and the spring at the base of the spring (joint and plate are new and joint is rubber instead of white plastic ring), the bolts on top of the mounts (torqued). I can't figure out what would cause the yellow foam to shift from its center permanently. Maybe when the car brakes the wheels stops a fraction of second before the chassis does. In that short lapse the strut would be then pushed forward (inertia?) by the weight of the car, causing the strut to shift forward as well, correct? That could potentially push on the foam between the plates. But then it should compress not shift, right?... There must be a lateral shift of the strut happening at some point, something that moved the foam instead of compressing it..
Thanks.
Thanks.
You got the answer, the foam is not elastic and has no rebound. Every time it moves, it doesn't come back all the way. The material Welsh is now using has no substance.
Hope the DCR's work, hope to have mine going after a bitt more time in the torture chamber on PR.

The Welsh mount on the right side of my 06 has shifted after 10K mi and four years. I'll do nothing while I wait for more info on the mounts Wayne is experimenting with, but even there it's hard to say what 10K mi. will do. Maybe just go back to OEM for now.
Surprise, my Welsh mounts HAD been doing good, but we took a 500 mile trip to Smokies past weekend and discovered the Rt. Frt. top ring around the strut nut had broken loose. The balance of the shock mount material looks OK but Very Dry. Looks like another R&R Liner and replace the mounts. Hope the bumps stops haven't crumbled. These also were Welsh. Guess I jinxed them. Only 37500 miles since 2015 install. These were the original poly kit and not the metal housings sold on E-Bay.
Kelly, I have the same era of Welsh mounts that you do (installed in early January 2016). Only a little more than 22,000 miles on them now and thus far they have remained in excellent shape. You can bet that I am now watching them closely and avoiding all potholes like the plague. If they eventually fail I will go with a set of Wayne's mounts....
^^ And yes indeed, my passenger-side Welsh upper shock mount failed and disintegrated last month. Wayne and I replaced both sides with his custom-designed components as many others here have done during the past year, and I am certainly grateful to have them now. Welsh has apparently stated their product is being revised for release at some future date, but my guess is that anyone who has been following this saga for the past couple of years will not be willing to trust them....
I "upgraded" to the Welsh ones and they disintegrated not long after. Started finding chunks of black rubber on the garage and wondered where from. Shocks both badly off center at the top. Nor did I like the ride, expected a firmer ride based on urethane upgrades to my other cars but these gave a harsh ride.
Called Welsh and they said they have had problems with the formulation in hot climates and sure enough, I live in Texas. But this is an occasional driver that is always garaged so not really buying it. They said they are out of stock since having a new formulation done but now will cost double, $300/pair. I am looking elsewhere.

As a casual outsider, my mounts need to be replaced and I would not even consider Welsh. The reports have always been the same! They do not last and they do not work well. Why do people still keep using them.
Although they too had what l believe to be the same design flaw as all the other mount brands, it appears somewhere along the way something changed with them, l would guess poly formulation.
This has led them lately to the same place most other mounts out there have landed (ie.in the trash)
what l don't understand is the Welsh reference to heat, poly loves heat.

I didn't have rubber hanging but definitely got off center very fast. I like the ride but not sure how safe it is to drive with shock mounts that are not centered. I guess I'll settle for no clunking noise when stopping like it did before replacement...
How's the temperature in your garage? Mine gets way warmer than outside and outside is 112 on average in the summer!

The other thing I always do with all my cars is after driving them and putting them in the garage I raise the hood to let the hot air out. I noticed this seems especially important on the XK8 since very quickly you can feel how hot the front fenders get once parked (or wings as our British friends call them).

I couldn't find my older post but with reference to the welsh 'poly' formulation. I did a test and found that the material started to melt somewhere around 170f.
My thinking is in hot, hot texas when the car is shut down the underhood heat, which does transfer to the surrounding suspention mounting area probably gets pretty close to this temperature.
As stated recently there are two great solutions, Baxtor and Wayne both can take care of the issue.
