By the number of window switches on Ebay, this must be a common problem. Both window buttons on the driver’s side have come away because one of the “legs” had broken at the retaining hole. I have two questions:-
1. There are not any switches on Ebay for an XK8 (although I only need the finger button). There are some for an S-types which looks the same from the top. I think some models of Ford may fit too. Do you know which Jaguar and which Ford models are compatible with an XK8?
2. Once I (find &) buy a replacement switch, how do I get the finger buttons out of the switch? Do I apply pressure to both sides to release the retaining pin from the hole at the bottom of the “leg”, or is there another way? I don’t want to break the replacement before it’s even installed into the switch on the arm rest. I assume then, that I just push the replacement in (one side at a time so that the pin aligns with the hole). window switch with broken buttons removed side view of button top & bottom view of button
So let's see if I have got this right: You don't know any compatible Jaguar models; It may be the same as a 2000'ish Ford Mondeo; and you have no ides how to remove the buttons or how to put them into the existing switch. That's been a great help.

He pointed you to A: a source for the buttons. Doesn’t matter which 2000’ ish Mondeo, they will all have it, and B: a user on this website who has gone through it whom you can contact for help or whose threads you can search.
It shouldn’t be hard to figure out how to extract the buttons.
And no, it is not a common problem for the buttons to come loose. It is more common for the switch to fail outright.
I understand you may be frustrated, but lashing out at another member who didn’t hand you the solution in a silver platter is not going to get your buttons fixed any quicker. Most of us here have not had a button come loose. You are in semi-uncharted territory.

Ebay, currently, has many of the units if you want the whole thing. And apparently numerous good options if you don't. Whole thing:
Another option right now with XK8 parts is two $25 single switches. Carefully take off the switch cover. Squeeze and pry is probably the answer for you for removal. Squeeze and insert is probably the answer for replacement. You can squeeze with needle nose pliers, but you probably want to protect the sides of the switch cover with paper towel or something similar to prevent marring. A butter knife slipped into one edge is another option for getting one side of the switch cover off of the tab.
Frankly, on reflection, you may have trouble here since both your switch covers have broken. Does not bode well for the rest of the plastic around it. I'd be very careful with the tabs on your current unit.
as very helpfully noted by David above. Sum total about $8 + shipping.
To get the whole switch off of your car, first part of this video, but I don't know if you need to do this since the replacement switch covers should simply seat onto the unit without removal of the whole thing
David has the right idea. (for some reason I love saying that )
The Mondeo/Escort switch cap looks to be a drop fit. Agree the switch assembly does not need to be removed.
A more adventurous solution would involve drilling out the remainder of the broken "ring" and replacing with a properly sized washer and epoxy. Totally doable.
