I hit the LKQ Jackpot. I hadn't been searching for XK8 parts much beyond FB Marketplace and CL. I checked my local LKQ inventories and what do you know, a 98 XK8 placed on the lot two days prior. I grabbed a toolbox and headed out assuming the worst. When I got there, the headlights, bumper and top pump and latch were gone, but everything else was untouched, and it was the matching interior color code to my new project. It had an oil change sticker showing it was due 9/1 at 137k. I assume timing chain tensioners broke and it was scrapped, but it was the nicest car I've ever seen at a pick-your-own lot. The top was in excellent condition, the leather seats were in great shape. The hood was missing clearcoat, but the rest of the body was dent free and mostly shiny.
There was no trunk floor so I'll keep using the sketchy homemade one in the car (made of chipboard, Amazon boxes and some black felt). All told I spent $118 before taxes and environmental fee.
cowl piece under the wipers to replace the one cracked by the tree: $11
wiper regulator, all arms and motor: $15 - I was going to dig into this to be prepared to fix the unattached right wiper and figured I would learn on this car. Once the trim piece was removed, 4 bolts and a connector had the entire assemble out in about 5 minutes. No matter what I find I now have an entire replacement for $15. Oh, and the wiper arms were so nice I took those too in case they are worth swapping, $12
glove box to replace the broken latch, $15
armrest with fully intact leather to replace the current one with cracks right at the elbow, $7 (local place gave me a $250 estimate to fix mine)
A pillars to recover and swap in, and two door edge felts - I couldn't remember the condition of mine, and these were mint, $16 for all (4 @ $4)
I snagged the three gauge cluster to replace the broken nav unit, $27
the wood dash - unfortunately the passenger side airbag cover was very cracked. Every other piece was perfect. I got the center to match the gauge cutouts, the speedo bezel, and both AC vents. LKQ price for the entire set - $9. Yes, I was charged $9 for four dash wood pieces!
cigarette lighter/12V port to replace the corroded one, $6
Lucky guy. Some fantastic bargains. Did you feel guilty ripping off the scrapyard?!!
People mostly part these cars out privately through ebay. They are elevating the prices and making a killing.
Yards make enough money to get by on other stuff.
The most cost/time effective part to pull off any jag is definitely the VDP 300-308 seat tables. 5 minutes gets you $200 easy. Gen V Eaton off the 4.2 is also pretty good money but at least 40 minutes to rip off. XK headlights would be nice money but I’ve never seen one in a yard.
LOL, I guess I should have been more precise. The trunk floor is fine, the spare tire cover and battery cover is the part in question. Here is what I found when I took it out for the first real cleaning when I got it. There were spare top hoses and other stuff in the trunk so I didn't notice that it fit poorly.
