Default XKR suspension

I ran into a guy with a 2004 XKR convertible. He said he just had $7000 worth of suspension work done. He wasn’t very knowledgeable about what was done but he mentioned air bags? Says the car is back in the shop for same problem. I am curious.

I have a 2003 XK8. Does the XKR have a significantly different suspension system that involves air bags?

yikes $7000 bucks

I have a 2002 XKR, took it to a dealer a few years ago to have an alignment done after installing new tires. They said I needed 4 adaptive shocks and 4 new springs before they could do an alignment. I believe they quoted me about $6000 then. I told them I could buy a lot of tires for that price. Rear ride height was in tolerance, front was about 1/2 inch low. I replaced the front shock mounts myself but it did not make measurable difference. Maybe someday I'll buy new shocks and springs for the front and have the alignment checked. Until then, I'm just enjoying the ride.

They sure are quick to jack that price up, pun intended. I spent nowhere near that kinda money on my front suspension and I bought a stand up compressor and other tools. No, it wasn't done in 1-2 days but it was far less costly. $6-7000?? I could have paid for my lift and had money left over. Just sayin', TM

Yeah, I also did not spend nearly that much and I did buy CATS shocks and lowering springs plus I also did my subframe mounts… well, basically my entire front suspension is new and most of my rear as well. I think I spent somewhere around $2,000 total in parts.

Being able to do your own labor goes a long way with these cars.

Default CATS removal

Hello,
My apologies if this subject is covered in another post or forum. The lack of availability (and cost) of replacement CATS shocks is leading me to replace with non-CATS. My concern is that FAULT indications will begin to fill the gauge cluster. I recall reading somewhere that a fix exists, but I can't recall the details. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Unplug the CATS module in the boot. If you open the boot and look down to the right of the lock you will see it. Terrys Jaguar Parts: Control Module Locations If you want the CATS shocks you can still get them, Adamesh sell them as well some others. Bilstein still make them as far as I know.

So, simply unplugging the module will prevent errors from displaying on the dash? Seems too simple for a Jag, but will definitely try it. Regarding the shocks, all of my enquiries have been met with, "...no stock...no availability....unknown when they'll be available..." so I'm pretty much ready to give in and just go with non-CATS shock (maybe manually adjustable coilers).

Yea it is that simple thankfully. Berkshire have the shocks available apaprently as well Jaguar XK8 XKR Shock Absorbers and Shock Bushes Parts - Berkshire Jag Components and Adamesh Jaguar XK8 & XKR Front Shock Absorber - Pair - R Performance / Adaptiv – Adamesh Jaguar XK8 & XKR Rear Shock Absorber - Pair - R Performance / Adaptive – Adamesh

They are very expensive shocks which wasn't nice when I went to replace mine. I think if I have to replace them again I will probably go down another route using the aftermaet shocks that Swallows make. Swallows Racing - AVO GTZ Adjustable Coilovers Jaguar XK XKR X100 - Swallows

Whereabouts in the world are you? You should add location to your profile if you're ever looking for parts availability.

I’ve heard that you can also have Bilstein rebuild them for you for MUCH LESS than buying new.

The active dampers are not rebuildable. I made enquiries of bilstein some years ago and was told this.

I have heard that as well although I'm not sure if it's true as I think some have asked Bilstein already and they said they couldn't.

FOR ALL X100 XKR owners with the adaptive shocks: I have talked to the folks at Delta Vee Motorsports ( USA) about their ability to refurbish our shocks (they refurbish other Bilstein shocks but have not offered to refurbish Adaptive shocks). He said a few others have also recently contacted them about this and as a result he wants to take a look at doing them. He asked me to send him a set of images showing all aspects of the shocks and he will then do a deep dive into what it would take. I have sent him the images (I have a a set of these used shocks from a prior replacement) and await his analysis. I’ll post their response once I hear back from them.
