Default Removing coat hooks

Greetings all,

Has any noticed or tried to remove the coat hooks right behind the passenger seats? I’m tall and could use just a few more inches to recline the seat to have a perfect seating position, and those dang hooks appear to be the only thing stopping my from reclining the seat that extra amount before it hits the bulkhead. They appear to be molded into the plastic/leather rear bulkhead but wondered if anyone had taken a look at these.

This was discussed a few years ago, and on the Performance seats at least there is a hollow in the back of the seat which fits around the coat hook so that the seat can go all the way back without fouling the hook. Can't remember if the Sports seats (ie base seats) have the same hollow, and dunno about the later (MY2019 on???) seats which replaced the Performance seats (which you appear to have going by the pic).
Moral of the story - move your seat all the way forward and then lean the backrest all the way forward, and take a gander at the back of the seat where the coat hook would hit/foul, and maybe you will see a hollow.

Oh wow, these are coat hooks?! I always thought it was some sort of stopper to prevent the seats from going too far back...

Where else would you hang your hi-viz jackets?

Unfortunately the slimmer facelift seats don’t have the hollowed-out section to account for the hooks. I wish it was just an easy screw I could loosen and pop them out. Any ideas from the group would be more than welcome!

On the convertible, they are not removeable, unless you want to go caveman.

Unrelated, I found I can get more legroom by moving the seat forward, then down, then back. Not sure why, but it allowed me to go further back

I went cave man and used a sharp thin blade and just cut it off as it gained me just that little more

I vaguely recall from a few years ago when this hook was first discussed that it is held on from the back with two screws/bolts, and the only way to access those screws/bolts is to remove the panel the hook is attached to. Doable but not easy and you risk breaking clips etc.
And then you may or may not have an ugly hole left behind.

How tall are you? I’m 6ft and I can fully extend my legs behind the pedasl during rest stops.

Was it worth the effort? Also would you mind taking a picture of what remains?

Its fastened from behind by 2 torx or Philippes, proper way to remove is by removing the entire bulkhead, which is quiet involved.

You might be able to reach it by removing the speaker grille only, space will be very constrained.

2 holes and an ugly unfinished area will remain, but you can always slap on some emblems/badges and call it a day.

That is the coupe only, and is how you can access the child seat top anchor. The convertible doesn't have that anchor and the hook is not removeable.

Quick update: I finally decided I needed to do something, so I brought out ole reliable (a phrase which here means my Dremel tool) and after a few minutes of grinding, and a few more minutes of cleanup, the extra inch in reclining room was immediately noticeable. So thankful I did this. The ugly innards of the plastic piece still remain on the rear bulkhead but it’s covered by the back of the seat so you’d never know it was even back there. Mission success. So glad I did this.

Take them out before they puncture the back of your seat! Not thrilled with the design of the coat hook or seat settings on my 2018 400 Sport coupe. I'm 6'5" and need all of the leg room I can get. Apparently where I place the seat put enough pressure against the worthless coat hook that it fatigued and punctured the back of my driver's seat. I quickly decided that the coat hook had caused way more damage that any good it will ever do me so I removed both. I used a Dremel tool for the first one which made a mess and took awhile but I learned it is 2 small screws holding it on so the second I removed with a large vise-grip pliers and just pushed the screws out the back of the top trim piece. It leaves 3 small holes which I'll cover with some black tape but in reality they aren't seen unless someone is moving the seat forward and looking behind it.
If you have similar seats and keep your seat back against those stupid coat hooks, I'd suggest being proactive and removing them. Really poor design placing something behind a seat that can puncture it and/or not placing a physical stop on the seat from preventing it from hitting it.

That looks very luxurious!🤣 I thought the hooks were useless too, until I saw a lady in a first year rear wheel drive R put her jacket on the hook and her purse and back pack behind her seat ! Using the Memory settings will prevent the seats from ever hitting the hooks.☮️
