Default Transmission oil change

Looking for advice on transmission oil change on a MY16S with 60k miles. I’ve owned this jag from 8/19 bought with 30k miles and had no issues. Is this the right time for a oil change. A few questions:
1- can you do a proper oil change without removing the pan
2- can you replace the original pan with a new gasket
3- what oil is best
4- which oil kit with new pan is recommended
I will have my mechanic do this work and will be asking his advice. I’ve read and reviewed posts and vids.
This forum has the knowledge and expertise from members that I respect and want to thank you in advance for your advice.
cheers Frank

Almost all transmission flushes/changes that i'm aware of on performance vehicles require the pan to be dropped because the filter (which should be replaced) is located in there.

Just buy your oil and filter from Jaguar, imo. If it's like most recent tranny changes I've seen, it will run you about $700-900 in Canadian Monopoly Money.

This is not a simple operation. The ZF8hp transmission requires either the ZF fluid for the 8 speed unit or an exactly equivalent fluid (and while available, you have to be assured that the fluid meets the ZF specifications). The oil change itself requires temperature-precise steps. The filter is integral with the pan. There are certain seals for the electronics that should be replaced, but there are kits available supplying the pan and filter, the gaskets and seals as well as new bolts.

Frankly, this is not a typical do-it-yourself job.

Look at @Therock88 's excellent procedure:

Yes, the filter is inside the transmission pan. The suggested Dorman pan has an available separate filter, for 'next time'. But, I'd guess that you would need to source a new pan gasket. (I initially got a pan that didn't have a gasket so I returned it)

I just asked my trusted independent Jaguar mechanic if it is time for me to replace the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles. His shop is quite capable, but he recommended no.
So I am not going to change it yet. He said 90,000 miles would be good. I have been using him since 2018

ZF recommends changing the fluid at 150,000km for normal conditions. This is from the fluid spec.

Here’s the oil change procedure:

DJS: Nice of you to provide the specs for the transmission change. But according it states:

ZF automatic transmissions are filled with specially developed semi-synthetic oils. At very high operating temperatures, the oilages faster than under normal conditions .Examples:Many trips at high speedsMany trips while towing a trailerSporty driving Depending on the driving style, ZF recommends a transmission oil change every 80,000 to120,000 km or after eight years at the late.

So the 80 to 120 km is 50 to 75,000 miles. Plus his car is now 9 years old with 60,000 miles. Do the people here think that his mechanic was wrong NOT to suggest the Tranny change? My 8 year old car has only 20,000 miles and is not sporty driven entirely, but now 9 years old. .I wasn't thinking of changing the in fluid either until I read this. Opinions??

Yes, it is the ADDITIVES that break down first, not the base synthetic oil. <---As told to us by an Exxon oil engineer, who had formerly worked for GM and saw issues with non-serviced transmissions.

Think about this: in the JLR maintenance schedule, most fluid replacement recommendations are for both miles AND time. The "lifetime' recommendations are set with the idea that the no issues will arise while the car is under warranty.

My car will turn 12 years old this spring, and has 94,000 miles on it. I’ll be changing the transmission fluid this year. (Most likely, I’ll let my local Indy do it - asked him about it, and he was familiar with the ZF procedure.)

Note that in TheRock’s write up (I think this is where it was), there’s discussion of captive bolts used to hold a brace that needs to be removed. Be sure to use a penetrating oil and hand tools so as not to tear the captive bolts out, as you would then have a nightmare on your hands.

Default Transmission

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, you can always count on this forum to respond to questions. It’s a tremendous resource to us. Has anyone used the transmission kit from Blauparts, it includes 7liters Euro ATF6700, pan with filter gasket, transfer pump etc. Thanks again for taking time to respond to my inquiry. Cheers Frank

That brace is only on the AWD cars.
