Default X-type with salvage title

Hello y'all.
I may have found me a jag for 1500USD (or less), it's an 03 X-type AWD with the 2.5L v6 and manual transmission. I can't imagine a standard jag is that common here in the states, so that's amazing. My only concerns is as states in the title. Seller says it was purchased (by them) under a salvage title. When questioned about it, they don't know why it was salvaged. So far it needs:
  • fuel pump
  • O2 sensor
  • driver front quarter panel
  • some paint on boot and rear driver quarter panel
It is not running and thus will need to be towed. I have an excursion, so towing is no issue in the slightest. I'm just worried about buying something that could be MUCH worse than I can imagine. If that's the case, that's sad because I was having a difficult time weighing whether I wanted my next car to be a big cat, or a manual, and this x-type fit both perfectly. Any help would be appreciated. Pics below.

Welcome to the forums turtle65,

Does the 08-19 sticker indicate registration expired three years ago? If so, you have to wonder why it hasn't already been fixed or scrapped.

The visible damage is LH front wing (fender) and front bumper. The bonnet (hood) line is raised on the left. This may just be misalignment at the hinge following the impact but if the panel is distorted, straightening is usually impossible. New body panels aren't available and would be huge cost even if they were. Harder to source used panels in the US than it would be here in England and I think starting a search before buying would be a wise move. If damage is limited to what can be seen then fitting replacement panels isn't difficult. The brightwork and indicator on the bumper look OK which is a big plus. That leaves a respray which is more easily costed. Given the areas needing attention, anything less than a full respray is false economy.

The problems arise if the front door pillar and/or front subfame have been distorted. Straightening isn't easy and would certainly involve specialist equipment and expertise. The views of both the door and the wheel suggest they are unaffected but only an examination of the vehicle will prove this for certain.

If repairs do turn out to be limited to front wing, bumper and paint, the total cost including purchase could be nearing that of buying an undamaged X-Type. Anything more with structural alignment would certainly tip the balance. An interesting challenge and undoubtedly very satisfying to complete the repairs but you will have to put a lot of money into it.

Welcome to the Forums.

I agree 100% with Graham.

It does not run, and that alone could be a rabbit hole event.

Good luck.

IF the car RAN, even with all the body damage, it would be worth $1500 in the current Incandescent used car market. As the Doesn't Even Run, you could do better elsewhere.
