1582 flight recorder what significance is this. Is it safe
Jaguar 2003 3 litre S type. My engine management light is on continuously due to the 1582 flight recorder. Is it safe to drive the car? I believe the code can only be reset by a Jaguar dealer. The one I used closed and the is not another one near me,

There are 2 separate EDR storage areas and a Start Time Reliability in that data section. (Flight Data Recorder is a misnomer as the car will not normally FLY)
You can clear the EDR (Engine Data Recorder) P1582 with PDU, WDS, IDS, AutoLogic, AutoEnginuity and probably other systems by going into the SETUP and CONFIGURATION MENU to read and clear the DATA files.
Both A and B sections can contain 37 frames of data before, during and after the EVENT that triggered the DTC. You can clear the DTC in the ECM but the EDR will still have the data logged as the P1582 file(s).
If you can clear the DTC in the ECM, then it is likely NOT a hard fault or it has been repaired. If you cannot clear the DTC, then there is a hard fault and must be remedied to be able to clear the DTC. The EDR will still have a log of that fault until is is overwritten? or cleared with a compatible diagnostic tool.
Hope this helps.

Post Script: P1582 is not in and of itself a FAULT, but just an indication that data is stored in the EDR section of the module.

As I understand it, P1582 does not put the MIL on (it doesn't on my STR and the official jag doc about it also says it does not).
(And would not cause a "smog" or the like test to fail.)
So with the MIL on you should have another code or codes - what is it / are they?

See page 2 for the description of each column in the chart, and page 67 for P1582. Reading between the lines, P1582 isn't really a fault per se, and thus is not annunciated to the driver. It's more of a low-level notice only a mechanic can see, saying that more troubleshooting data has been saved. That makes me think more true fault codes have been stored, but for whatever reason, your scanner or code reader can't retrieve them. Some tools don't always play nice with Jaguar-specific codes, which is why I asked what you're using.
FWIW.
