Default Cranks for 2 to 3 sec. to start

I recently had a lower hose replaced and they had to remove the intake manifold. While it was off they cleaned out gunk from the inside of the manifold and convinced me to have a fuel injection service. I might be regretting that decision. The car runs fine, no problems at all but it now takes 2 to 3 seconds of cranking before it starts where before, it started immediately. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I would prefer doing it myself if not too involved.

Dennis, when was the fuel filter changed? If you don't know - change it... But 2-3 secs is not bad but a new fuel filter should aid in improving fuel pressure to the rail/injectors.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for the suggestion. Anyone who keeps a Jag (or any car) running over 230K mi. gets my attention. Worth more than 2 cents.

Thanks! Luckily I'm approaching 250K miles on the old girl...

AND he changed the timing tensioners himself!

That is noteworthy.

Try this: Turn the key to on but not to start. This commands the fuel pump to run for a few seconds to fully pressurize the fuel rail. After five seconds or so, turn the key to start.

If the engine now starts immediately, the pressure in the fuel rail had bled down from after the last shutdown. That would point to a fuel pressure regulator issue or a leaky injector.

Working from memory, I think the fuel pressure regulator has a vacuum connection to control its output. Make sure the vacuum hose was properly reconnected. Not sure that would cause the slow start problem, but since you mentioned recent work in the area, it's a good idea to check.

Isn't there just a fuel pressure sensor but no actual regulator as such (as there's no return fuel line)?

(The regulation is via software control of the fuel pump.)

I gave it a try but no difference in starting. Is there a code to tell if there is a leaky injector or poor fuel pressure?

No code for either condition I believe.

What I did was hook up a fuel pressure gauge. How fast does it drop off?

I found erratic fuel pressure but I was chasing a fuel pressure code.

Another test for leaky injectors is to hold the gas pedal to the floor when you turn the starter on. That shuts off the injectors. If they have been leaking into the intake the engine should start right up.

The S-Type uses a RETURNLESS fuel system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BOTH fuel modules use a check valve so it could be in either module (electric pump or transfer pump).

Fuel pressure check/leakdown would be first on the diagnostic list.

Thanks Motorcarman, would the fuel injector service have caused a problem with either of the pumps? It always started immediately before the service.
