Hi everyone
I have a stupid question regarding 2004 4.2
trunk release button inside vehicle will not open trunk
fuel door button works
This is the problem
after removing glove box to get to heater blend door s
I decided I had enough so put tools and vehicle parts in trunk closed trunk lid not realizing keys were sitting in socket set case
Is there a fuse for trunk release button
I even swapped trunk release button over with my other
2004 4.2 and still did not work
Yet both buttons work on my other vehicle
So there is no problem with trunk release button
I have read there is a Valet key button in glove compartment but dam if I could find it or is that for Earlier models
I do have a spare key but that's with my wife 1000 km away
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have added some photos

You may not have the valet button. My UK car doesn't - but it does have the feature! The wiring is there behind the glove box and is easily left disconnected when you've been in there (yes, I did).
Thanks all my s types are RHD from the UK but were new Zealand new so not imported
my 2002 STR has the button in glove compartment
So thats what got me stumped
Guess they changed it in 2003 or 2004
have glove compartment removed at the moment
There is only one set of wires with a 2 pin plug on
which goes to glove compartment light
Does stupid answer help?:
You mentioned only that the release button in the car does not work...
So, did you try pressing the trunk release button between and under the letters G and U of Jaguar on the rear of the trunk, above the number plate?
Had another look at glove compartment can see no button
will re install glove compartment tomorrow when its daylight
and see if that makes a difference

sorry, this happened to me (01V6). The button on the trunk did not work nor did the button in the car. I used the keyhole just under the trunk, and that worked. I'll take a photo tomorrow if this is still an issue. I may have misunderstood what you wrote. I am a bit distracted tonight.

Are you saying you still have the glovebox area disassembled?
Were any wires disconnected, whether still torn apart or you've already reinstalled the glove box?
Even without the valet switch (not installed in all markets), the wiring for the trunk release passes through a couple of connectors in the glove box area.
Considering this new problem started only after work in that area, it sure seems like a connector didn't get put back together yet. Depending which connector, this would disable the interior switch (next to the fuel door release) and the exterior switch on the trunk lid.

No. The button only momentarily connects a ground to the General Electric Control Module (GECM) as a signal to open the trunk. The GECM in turn sends a signal (via data bus) to the Rear Electric Control Module (RECM) to briefly energize the trunk release solenoid. Power to actuate this solenoid comes via the RECM, but I don't believe there's a separate fused input for the trunk release.
Open your year and scroll down to figure 12.1. At the upper left corner, you will see the valet switch. The diagram isn't super clear, but note the dashed lines to the left of the switch. Either a valet switch is installed, or a bypass wire in place of the switch. (Both go to the same input pin on the GECM.) When the valet switch is activated, the switch opens and prevents the GECM from receiving the ground signal from both trunk release buttons. If the bypass wire was not connected, the system would behave exactly as if you had a valet switch and had pressed it. I'd say it's time to revisit any recent work in the glove box area.
ALL S-Types have a VALET SWITCH in the glove cubby.
I have never seen an X200/X202 without a Valet Switch.
The electrical guide does not show a car without one.(figure 12.1 and 12.2 of the electrical guide)
Double Locking or NON Double locking cars have a valet switch in the glove cubby.
I had a customer a few decades ago that had the problem.
I opened the cubby door and there was a stack of papers lodged against the button/switch that enabled VALET MODE.
Moving the stack of papers for access to the switch was all that was required to 'fix' the car.

Hello everyone
thanks for all the information
Had a good look inside glove compartment still can not see any switch
i have had this car since new
I have added some photos
is valet switch on left or right side in glove compartment
Well Jaguar shows both a switch and a blanking plate for the valet switch. So they must have sold cars without the valet or why offer a blanking plate?
This is from JPART (Note I also have never seen any S-Type without the Valet switch).
It plainly shows either a switch or a blanking plate is installed. Blanking plate is item 15 and circled in red. What's even more surprising is they list two different part numbers depending on the cars VIN!
Jaguar part #XR829755 NLA or XR845403 which is about $50 but also shows as discontinued on the main Jaguar dealer sites.
