2000 S-type 8 cylinder

My car has a problem getting into "D" you have to put it into a lower gear first then you can put it right into D without any problems. I am not a mechanic or anything close to it.

At first I thought it was a transmission problem but as soon as you put it in D weather it the car was moving or not it will drive fine. Meaning if I just get to the car and start it up and put it in 3 first then into D --without-- moving the car the car will operate normally. So my conclusion is that it's not the transmission because it would not go into 1st gear at all if it was, but again I am not a mechanic so I might be shooting in the dark here.

I wonder if I am the only one with this problem or if there is someone else out there with something similar

Not uncommon with early cars (V6 as well as V8). Make sure it's fixed soon before you're stranded.

It's almost for sure the shifter etc mechanism. Could be awkward DIY.

You probably need a revised selector lever cable assy.
