2002 X-type Brakes
I have read elsewhere in this forum about the procedure for replacing brake pads and rotors. However, does anyone have a rough estimate of approximately how long or number of miles before a brake replacement is needed? I know this always depends upon driving conditions, etc. But on average does anyone have a feel as to when it is normally necessary. Do the brake pads come equipped with feelers and if so is the sound they make the high pitched scratching sound (that I've heard on other cars) or more like a metalic moan (which is what I am hearing on mine)? If pads have to be replaced do you always have to replace the rotors? How can you tell? I know the easiest way would be to jack up the car and remove a wheel to have a look at the pads but I was hoping that I could utilze the experience of others here to help me determine if I need to start messing around. Thanks.

i had to change mine at 32000 miles. didnt hear any different sounds, just looked at the pads and they looked like they needed changing. Dont need to change the rotors everytime, only when it is needed. Theres a coouple of techs on the forum that will prolly be able to help you more.

Like you said, it all depends on how you drive, traffic conditions, etc.
3mm pad thickness is the minimum you should go. Inspect both pads since they sometimes wear unevenly.
You should be able to 50-70K miles on the original rotors. Factory spec for discard of rotors is absurd. Basically, after 20-30K miles they reccomend new ones.

When i asked the dealer if it was normal to need new brakes at 32000 miles, they sed i was lucky, and that they usually need changing way earlier, so i guess it does depend on the way you drive. I changed the front and the back at the same time, eventhough the rears still had some way to go before needing replacing, so maybe that was y i didnt get any noise. Did u change ure yet Vac, keep us updated, and good luck

Okay, so I pulled the wheels, an act I was dreading because of past experience with the wheel being locked onto the hub because of oxidation (by the way loosening the lugs and rolling the car back and forth makes this a surprisingly easy job with no whacking of the wheel required). Front pads had about 6mm left on them and the rear had less then 3mm. Replaced them all at 58000 miles. Rotors looked fine so I did not replace them. Tricky thing was the rear caliper piston where you had to screwin (left side counter clockwise and right side clockwise) while pressing in at the same time. Ideally you need a special tool to do this but I found that a large bladed screw driver did the trick. I made sure to allow excess fluid to bleed out and not to push it back into reservoir. Really a very easy job to do provide you have no problems getting the wheels off. Back on the road and so far no noise. Hopefully that was the problem. But in any case the back brakes surely needed to be changed anyway.

Probably not 04..........I think its been a fairly recent change, say in the last year or so that they've changed to the greenstuff pads as OEM.........Buck will probably know 4 sure.
Still, dont you think thats too often to be replacing items like rotors which aren't usually inexpensive?
I can only go for 16 years of driving approx 50k miles per year. Had the Ford Mondeo most of that time........rotors then were gettin changed probably on average at maybe 60 - 70k miles or therabouts.

usually between 30,000 and 40,000 is when most jaguars wear out their brakes. when we do brakes we replace rotors and pads. it reduces the possibilty of noise after turning the rotor, plus the rotors are too thin by the time the thick OEM pads wear into the rotor.

Just a side note on all this "factory" stuff. I just learned this the other day and it blew my mind:
For example, most GM models trucks come from the factory with ceramic brake pads. They last forever, don't dust, and are very quite. So I think to my self, "Self, let's get the Delco parts so we have those same pads which are so great." Wrong. Delco is not the same pad that you had as original. If you go to the dealer for a brake job they offer you pads in either a GM box or a Delco box. The GM boxed stuff is what your car came with. The Delco boxed stuff is Bendix or Wagner or some other quality brake pad. It makes you wonder, what I am I buying?

RE: 2002 X-type Brakes
Lets be honest, the std brakes on the X are terrible, thats why so many people change to EBC redstuff pads and sometimes new grooved + dimpled rotors. There's also those that go for Mintex or some other brand.
I need to check if they do the redstuff pads for the Audi to when it comes round for replacement. I'm sure they probably do!
Having said that, I dont know what they use but Jeez those brakes are awesome compared to the X.........The difference is that noticeable, even the wife has noticed. This from the same woman who drives around with maybe 8-10 psi in the rear tyre and doesn't notice a difference in the handling[sm=WTFsgign.gif]
