Buying a 2002 2.5 Manual... good deal?
Hi everyone, thank you for all the great info you have provided here. I have been lurking for a while trying to make a buying decision. Your information has helped me find my next purchase. What do you think of the following stats? I think it's a good deal, could be better but you tell me.
Cost $3,000
2002 2.5L manual with 80,000 miles.
The exterior is in good condition, it has some scratches on the bumper, 1 small paint fading spot, 3 inch rust on the seem of the hood (drivers side).
clean car fax
The car will need 4 new rotors since it has been sitting for a while.
AC needs at least a charge, hopefully that is it.
Comes with 1 key fob.
The car has been completely detailed. Interior looks brand new.
the driver side door had some trouble opening. (needs lube?)
Parking break is good
all lights work, window motors seem strong, clutch feels like new, shifts smooth, sounds like a brand new car....
and well its sexy looking!
Im pretty mechanically inclined and have done most of my own repairs on old cars for years.
what do you think?

Hey USMC KAK, I have about the same car, and, bought it for $9,000 with about the same mileage. It's been a reliable car, I believe it was well kept. I now have 120,000 miles on it.
I joined the Jag Forums the first week I had it and learned how to do the gear box oil changes. I.e, transfer case, manual trans, and rear differential. Upon inspection, you should check these for leaks.
If you buy this car, don't forget to grease the center prop shaft bearing! Another thing is: replace the upper radiator T pipe which cracks and develops a slow leak. It's a hard coolant line located under the air box.
At some point before 100K miles you will want to change the spark plugs, kind of a big job, esp. the first time. I did it around 95K miles, dealer charges around $900. Btw, you can look up the above subjects on these forums using key words.
If the clutch feels good, the shifting is good, and, the engine sounds good, as you said, it's probably a good idea to buy this car for only $3,000. That is a super low price, there might be something else wrong with it. My Jag BBCs at only $4K. That's irrelevant to me bc I'd never sell it. This car has it's strengths, and one of them is NOT that it's fast off the line. The engine is a sweet hi revving, reliable V6, but as with any AWD system, there are extra losses compared with a regular two wheel drive. HOWEVER, you can confidently accelerate into the turns with an X Type and hold the road every time. In addition, the X loves high speed hwy drives, it happily holds 110 mph for as long as you're willing with a top speed of 134 mph as far as I've read, but never gone over 110. Do more reading and suite yourself.

Thanks, for the input, I will deffinitly be doing the work you recomended. I used to edmunds to get a 'book' value, and in perfect condition it says retail would be 4k, although retailers around here would charge alot more. But it would cost about 1k to get it to be in that condition so I am thinking the price is right. I would still like to get another 200 off in my negotiations!
The car does appear to be in almost too good of condition and I was suspect of it being stolen or a chop shop job. Car fax seems to check out with the VIN I got. When I get the tittle I will have to double check it and make sure the VIN plate hasnt been messed with. Is there an easy way to check other VIN's? Im guessing door jams, and I know there should be one on the frame and enginge, but are they easy to inspect?
oh there was another issue, a blinking on and off again air bag light. These seem to be common issues with all the sensors and will take some troubleshooting.
The car seems to have been sitting for a while, any suggestions on things to look for/replace based on sitting for an extended period of time? Im guessing I need to really keep an eye on any hoses and belts that may have dried out, and change all the fluids, filters, and add lubricants.
Maybe I will do a write up on the process for the forum. I have seen a similar thread that is popular.
Im excited to pick it up today, and I will post pictures soon. This will be my daily driver and family weekend / backup car.

You mentioned 3" of rust on the hood (driver's side). And, I noticed you live in NY where it snows. Could there be more rust on the under-carriage from salty winter roads?
Just a thought. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Dennis, I bought it, it was actually located in CT too....
You can see my new thread with issues here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...oblems-117834/
And Patterson I was scared to death of rust after reading some of the posts here but I looked at the common places for signs of rust and it appears good. I dont know what could be on the inside but the bottom of the A beam looks good, no paint bubbles, underneat is very good, my seem on the edge has little to no rust. So I am conffident she will at least last a few years without crumbling apart. That is the frame though, who knows if I can keep the rest of her running
