Default CV removal procedure

Greetings, I have a 2004 xtype and I'm a bit confused regarding the removal procedure for the cv drive shafts. I keep seeing a reference to not pull one of the shafts no more than 200 mm from the transfer case housing. How are you supposed to remove the whole cv drive shaft assembly from the car? I've read through the description below, but its not clear to me. Any clear pictures of the procedure out there

Ive removed a number of cv type drive shafts and usually its just a matter of a sharp pull is needed to get them out. What am I missing?

Thanks, Davud

using special tools 307-443 RH Halfshaft splitter ,307-442 RH Halfshaft splitter handle
detach the halfshaft.
Remove the exhaust muffler inlet pipe.
Remove the halfshaft seal.
Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
To prevent damage to the transfer box internal seal,
make sure that the link shaft is not retracted further than
200 mm from the transfer box casing.
remove the halfshaft.
Attach special tools to the halfshaft.
Lever the special tools to displace the halfshaft.

Search is useful but I am still confused about the 200mm thing; how do you replace the seal on the right side of the case if you can't withdraw the whole shaft?

You remove the transfer case to remove the circlip on the end of the 'through shaft' so it does not tear the inner seal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that is really annoying.
I've actually got an agreed price on the car as a trade in for something else and now I am screwed as I can't move it on with oil dripping on to the exhaust and stinking out the cabin when the heater is on.
Chuffing marvellous.

OK, Thank you. The point I was missing is you have to remove the transfer case to remove the right hand side (Passneger side for me) shaft that goes into the transfer case. It sounds like you can just replace the mid shaft and outer CV but have to look into how to separate the inner CV joint.

It sounds like the left side CV is typical. Just pull.

Thanks, David

there is a special tool to do this. kind like a pickle fork but with a bracket that bolts up to hold that inner shaft in place. Yes if you pull the inner shaft out you risk damaging the inner transfer case to trans seal which results in a internal leak of fluids between the 2.

Exclamation Right Hand CV removal Procedure 2002 X type

I damaged my right front passenger side inner CV boot while replacing the control arms a couple of months ago. It was just a pin hole but it is really spewing some grease around. I have read all of the threads about the danger of pulling out the shaft that goes into the transfer case, but without the special tool to secure the shaft, I'm concerned it will be too difficult to do without moving it the 200mm. Has anyone come up with some pictures of doing this with the transmission in the car? I've seen the pics of the process with the transmission removed, but I'm still confused how to get it done. I've read about the pickle forks, but I want to know if anyone has been successful doing that, and what the process would be to use them.

Is there another way to remove the inner boot without pulling out the entire axle that someone could recommend?
