Without more info such as model, year, engine it is going to be difficult to advise where to start searching. You should add that info to your signature thru the use of the User CP on the top bar of the page.
Vehicles before April 2004 have a different wiring arrangement than the ones after April 2004.

Has any recent work been done around the dash console area?

No it hasn't
Yes it's a x type, 2002, 2.1 petrol manual.
I am a vehicle technician myself , but don't want to start pulling things apart if there is a common cause of , keep reading about it suffers numerous earth faults , only thing I've done is a new , genuine o2 sensor , but it was doing prior to that

One thread is enough - and how many did you find using Search?

One of those the engine cut out so I don't think that's the same.

Another involved a remote starter - which brings up the possibility your car has aftermarket change(s) (which you may not know about). Yu may have to go hunting for ugly / badly done wiring, especially if something was removed and badly taped up.

Mostly the answer is go through power/ground connections plus other connectors. Consult the free to download workshop manual etc...
