First day with this car I check the oil, using the drop down menu and the digital representation of an oil gauge. It says "Overfilled". The Owner's Manual says do not drive the car, serious engine damage may result. See a qualified technician.
Do they mean have a qualified technician come to my house or for me to get the car transported to a shop?

In the good old days if you had too much oil you could loosen the drain plug, let some out and check the dipstick again.

Does that work in this high tech universe? Is there anything special about draining out some oil from the engine?

Note that the Dealer Certification Inspection Report says they checked the oil. They might have, or not. They might have changed the oil after the Inspection, or not. The sensor on the oil level gauge may be faulty, or not.

Does anyone have any advice on this issue?

You almost certainly have a metal tube centered under the oil filler cap.

If you do get a pump to pull some oil out through that tube until the digital reading is good.

That is how I do my oil change on my Rover using an oil pump out device.

 

John: Thanks, you are exactly correct. I see the little tube. After I am done making the dealer feel bad, I will take advantage of that.
And it makes me think I could slip a straight piece of maybe 14 GA copper wire down that tube to get a dip stick type reading, or at least see an oil sample once in a while.

Been there tried that and no luck. Something down the tube a ways prevents pushing a thin wire down far enough. You can maybe get an oil sample.

 

I had the same thing happen right after I got mine. When the dealer checked it was at 101%, barely overfilled, not enough to hurt anything. Having a mighty-vac or similar pump is useful. Reminds me I need to get one.

X260 owners (and maybe X250 as well?) should be aware of a situation involving oil changes by dealers. The AWD and RWD models take different amounts of oil and if the dealer mislabels your car during the fill (done automatically by machine) you could either get too much oil or not enough by I believe a quart. In my case I'm sure they labeled mine as an AWD and it was under filled by a quart. I'm guessing the OP's car is an AWD model? Also, you can check oil level before starting car from cold by not putting your foot on the brake and going through the "wait 10 minutes" period.

 

Very good point Mleskovar: I do have a AWD, my hometown mechanic removed a quart and the gauge now reads below the Full line.
In the process I saw that the oil was pretty dirty, so I will get it changed.
The dealer's assurance that the previous owner had the oil changed 2,000 miles ago is probably in error.
Curious that the 164 Dealer Cerification Inspection does not include check engine oil level.

This was my third oil change and the previous two had the level right at the full line. When they did it last time it was just above the add oil line and the dealer said it was OK when I phoned them. Probably wouldn't be a problem as the car burns zero oil but I had them add oil anyway. They said they added 1/2 quart when I took it back and that put the level line 1/2 way to full.
